Title: Rear Bumper Guard Upper Rubber Contact Bumper - 67
Post by: Bossbill on June 03, 2019, 05:12:47 PM
My 67 parts coupe dated 4A; VIN 7R189340 has the rubber bumper fronts.

All 67 Mustangs, even Shelbys, got the rear color-coded bumpettes.

I'll bet by now most of them don't have the U shaped rubber guards fitted to the rear guards, installed behind the bracket at the top.

I have never seen those rubber bumpers. Could you show in a picture how they fit?

Interestingly, they aren't in the Assembly Manual -- the opposite of what usually happens -- but they were on my parts car as well as on the Shelby.
They may be an aide in assembling the rubber strips. Perhaps to shield the sharp edge from fingers?
Maybe they were meant to be discarded or are a SJ only item?

I have seen them on other Shelbys.

Here are a few pics.

[added] Do note the red oxide has been applied the way I found paint on the guards during clean-up

Those are not typical seen on the rear bumper guards of 67 Shelby's. The rear bumper guards typically had a cone shaped bumper where you picture the U shape. If it had a hole it had the cone shaped bumper. Some others didn't have a hole and maybe those got the U shaped but I have not found them on the rear in a unmolested context on a SJ Shelby. I haven't seen them all but I look a lot because of the cone shaped bumpers. Maybe a SJ thing. The"U" shaped bumpers are however seen and found on the front bumper arms .They did easily fall off so many probably didn't survive in place. They were suppose to be on all 67's but that is a stretch. Yes they are repro'ed. Yes they are in the assemblyline body manual. pg 8 view "C".  Sorry I am having a problem getting to get the picture to load right side up. After 3 rotated try's I gave up.

Note sure if its purpose and have found a fair number of rear bumper guards without the need hole. Looks like another item to add to the 67 List to see if there is something we can discover about its usage and such. Challenge it that its hard to see in many pictures and when looking at the car and you can't determine with ease if the hole is there or not if there is not a cone style bumper

Page 63 view 'A' of the Osborne Manual has details on the rear and shows neither a cone or U. We all know how the assembly manual works ...

Neither my car or the parts car have a hole and they both came off the line within 5 days of each other (or less).
If the lower valance was a replacement I'd be suspect, but it matches the dates of other sheet metal.

Just saw Jeffs pic, so I took a pic of this one in the same orientation. It could be an assembly aid so the bumper doesn't scratch the paint of the side of guard if it comes into contact with it.
This one has been in contact with the parts car bumper as noted by the dent in the rubber.

Here is a picture I took of a 67 unrestored car that may have that same type of bumper. When I took the picture I thought it was a square shape push in type. I could not see how it was attached.

Going to need these again and VIN's once we get to looking at 67 running changes. Guess I'll split what we have in this thread related to these bumpers and you all can add some identification/reference point to the pictures you have already posted and/or have documented.  Will do it in a day or so, so you can prepare.

Thing it has enough importance not to be buried on the section page of another thread ;)

I agree on the importance of this. I always thought it was strange that some had a bumper and some did not. I am sure now that Ford's specifications to its subcontractors called for a bumper. Now I see that all should have had them. I hope someone will step up and reproduce the correct bumper.

I will add that when Ford received these bumperetts they had the rear bumpers in place, so consequently the bumpers should be painted body color. It will be interesting to see if this new bumper has the remains of original paint on it.

Marty both are reproduced. the u shaped one can be bought through NPD . I think they have it listed for the bumper arm. The cone shaped version bumper is a early 60's full size Ford item that Dennis Carpenter sells.

Saw one at a swap meet so I thought I'd add the picture.

Thanks. That is what seems to work well here on this site compared to some others. Picking and supporting one or a couple of threads on a particular subject so that the pictures, data and experiences can be located in one location.

Works most of the time and again thanks for the nice clear picture - only think missing is what the VIN was that it came off of ;)

Mine does not have the additional bumper - here is a picture of the area.  Has an imprint probably from the tooling where the piece was held.  Original parts from car listed below.

As it has been discussed before the type you picture utilizes a rubber bumper that has a made on clip . The othere type has a hole and uses a bumper designed to go in the hole. Regardless of type both were meant to utilize a rubber bumper.

Wouldn't be the "U" shaped one like in the second picture of Bill's original Post ?

Good point.  I was thrown off by the first post which is a picture of the front.  I have one original "U" shaped bumper left, will need to pick up the 17B947-1K kit from NPD to see if the small pieces look anything like the original - thanks Bob G I would have not looked at this kit otherwise.  I did not see any other source for these.

So for the rear it looks like one of two styles, the "U" shape or domed type.  That wasn't clear to me as I read through the posts, but it is now  ;)
