Title: Coil Decal
Post by: htpratt on September 26, 2009, 07:46:53 PM
Where does the coil decal go on my June '65 car, on the coil or the coil bracket?

originally no decal was used. it was an ink stamp with a date code for your application. however if you choose to use the decal it would go on the coil. keep in mind though that the repro decal has an incorrect date code.

Yes, kind of amusing that so many use the coil decal and the most common version has an "0LEC" date code... which would be October of 1970!

htpratt,
Take that coil sticker to a store that can make a rubber stamp. Figure out the acceptable date code for you car and have them place that date code where the OLEC goes. Use some silver paint, testors model paint works the best, and stamp it. If you have a scanner and computer set up you might be able to do it yourself. The stamp should only run about 10 to 15 dollars.

Yes you can just copy the decal but it will be "more" correct but not correct ;) Since the design they used is not the same as the original - what we're  striving for

Think a couple fo guys were working on their own stamps and should be offering the stamps or the service soon.

I dont know what I was thinking, I have a PDF file of the coil and other "stamps." htpratt if you would like them let me know by sending me a  PM. I will be happy to send them to you. All you will need to do is change the dates on the stamps.

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum.

I hope this topic isn't to old to revive, help needed on this topic.

I found a coil with a nice stamp and the date stamp is 0HBB, I don't know the date code convention, YM??.   The date is 1970 August but what are the last 2 letters?  If I wanted to make a stamp with a December 67 date that would be 7M??.

John,
The 0HBB date would translate to
0 = Year (1970)
H = Month (August)
B = Week of the Month (2nd week)
B = Work Shift (2nd shift)

 If you wanted a December 67 stamp, 7M would be correct with any combination of the week and shift. of course depending or your scheduled build date.
Week of the month A, B, C, D, or E
Shift A, B, or C

Thanks for the date decode info  :)

Another question, My '75 MPC looks like it says most 65 and up coils have part number suffix -B.  Yet other sources indicate -A and/or -B's for the coil. This info may not be referring to the stamped part number. Is the -A the expected part suffix for coil stamps ???

Consider that the MPC does not list what parts were used originally on cars but what part Ford carried (at the time the MPC was printed) that would work as a replacement part. If you remember this you may understand why a fair amount of information found in these books will not help someone restoring a vintage Mustang )

 I've seen the coil stamp covered by the hold down bracket on some original coils. If I judge a car and the stamp isn't visible, I don't deduct points for this reason. That's the way manufacture did it on some cars.

Hey, Anyone have some pics of some original coil stampings.  I have stamps that I had made.  I'm concerned with proper placement of the stamp.  Also Ink color, Yellow or silver?

Tony,
Here's the original from my May 66 Convertible. Ink was silver.
