Title: 65 SJ C code Differential Paint Marks - Need Help
Post by: G Wood on January 03, 2010, 06:14:26 PM
I have the rear out of my Nov build, 65 C Code/auto SJ Fastback.

I have found the following paint marks but cannot determine what they are and the correct colors.

1) The 95 on top of the case appears to be either white or green?
2) The yellow mark on the top of the casing I cannot determine what it is?
3) There appears to be white or yellow paint on the rear of the diff casing?
4) Pink paint appears on driver side u-bolts only.
5) The number 77 appears on the passenger side of the casing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Will try and help by comparing yours and others. Please understand that this is not a perfect science. Also original colors may stand out clearer if you lightly sand (fine paper) or cut through the paint to look at the base color. Wetting with a little WD40 helps also.

Others, with poor, barely there traces have used lye/oven cleaner but be careful and watch closely as the color will appear then dissolve quickly

Remember to take some tracings also since yours are so nice and clear.

Have seen white, light blue  Suggest you try one of the methods mentioned above to help determine what the original color was

2) The yellow mark on the top of the casing I cannot determine what it is?

This is often (from others I've seen) a number - could be single or double digit. This may be what remains of an "11", of a "4" or a "14". The single line to the drivers side may be an individual from the other done in white

3) There appears to be white or yellow paint on the rear of the diff casing?

Have seen, in that location, both colors used

4) Pink paint appears on driver side u-bolts only.

Never found this so can't report that this is typical,  but Charles has recently found paint daubs on his 65 SJ car. The one on the passenger side may have just worn off as Charles found both of his marked

5) The number 77 appears on the passenger side of the casing.

Haven't seen that high of a number before - wonder if its a poorly written "22"

Color and general location looks typical IMHO . Just duplicate what you found

Hope this helps a little

Thanks Jeff. You are right I think it is a 22 vs a 77. Will continue to clean-up and see what else I can find. I found two light green daubs on the leaf spring today.

Regards

By "daubs" do you mean spray paint "dots"   or stripes ?

Have you looked at the blog I'm doing for the restoration of a '65 SJ car?  I found very similar markings, although the one I'm doing is a K code.  I highly recommend using the Evaporust stuff to clean parts.  http://65kresto.blogspot.com/

Jeff:

Dots, about the size of a quarter. I can post photos later tonight. The small leaf is currently soaking in Evaporust and the green paint was exposed.

Jeff:

There are 3 green or white paint dots that have appeared after soaking. Date stamp code is also starting to appear.

Yes looks like white in the pictures but your a better judge in person. Once you get down to the engineering numbers we may be able to compare those to others with similar marks

Looks to be the typical spray paint dots of that time period. Thanks for sharing

I just used evaporust on my diver side leaf spring and it looks like I have two green dots.  I am still waiting on the passenger side to clear up but will let you know what I find.  Here is a pic.  You really can't see that it is green but trust me, they are

It's a San Jose Car built 10/29/64. A Code.  Everyone else has two colors, what does two green mean?

What are the engineering numbers from one of those springs? That would confirm that they were the same

The marks were just a way to identify one set of  springs from another for the workers who had many to choose from and little time to grab them and install them

According to the '65 and '66 MPC, there were 4 different type of rear springs in use on 65-66 Mustangs.  The number stampings are listed out for each, so we should be able to fill in the blanks rather easily with a good sampling of original colors.

Here's the list:

650lb rating: Fastbacks/Convertibles (6 cyl. & 8 cyl. 260, 289 2/B, 289 4/B)
Stamping: C4ZA 5556-B-D-F-N-U
Color codes: 2 light blue dots or stripes

610lb rating: Coupes (6 cyl. & 8 cyl. 260, 289 2/B, 289 4/B)
Stamping: C4ZA 5556-C-E-M-T
Color codes:

650lb rating: Fastbacks and Convertibles (8 cyl. 289 4/B Special)
Stamping: C4ZA 5556-K-L-S-Y
Color codes: Green and Yellow spray dots or stripes  (dots at San Jose and Dearborn)

610lb rating: Coupes (8 cyl. 289 4/B Special)
Stamping: C4ZA 5556-H-J-R-V
Color codes: 2 red dots or stripes (dots at San Jose and Dearborn)

Charles you might need to put some time periods for the method of markings if your going to cover all 64-66. Just a thought.

650lb rating: Fastbacks/Convertibles (6 cyl. & 8 cyl. 260, 289 2/B, 289 4/B)
Stamping: C4ZA 5556-B-D-F-N-U
Color codes: 2 light blue dots or stripes

Doesn't seem to match the colors we're seeing for the -N

610lb rating: Coupes (6 cyl. & 8 cyl. 260, 289 2/B, 289 4/B)
Stamping: C4ZA 5556-C-E-M-T
Color codes:

Have one example with two white stripes (-M Spring 66 application)

650lb rating: Fastbacks and Convertibles (8 cyl. 289 4/B Special)
Stamping: C4ZA 5556-K-L-S-Y
Color codes: Green and Yellow spray dots or stripes  (dots at San Jose and Dearborn)

Have stripes on San Jose cars if we're moving into later 65 and 66

Have double yellow (dots) and single yellow (stripe) examples from 66 San Jose for these also. Will have to look at them to see which last letter they are.

Last thought - should we move this to a new thread ??  ;)

My numbers are the same as Chris: C4ZA 5556 N 282 E 4. The dots are green. I know that our cars are built within a few weeks apart in San Jose.

FYI... don't know if we discussed on this site, but the 282 is the day of the year.... 4 would be 1964.  Not sure what E means, but it shows up on multiple year leaf springs.

The 282nd day of the year would of been October 9th back in 1964. Interesting

Just an F.Y.I.  I restored a 66 Shelby carryover car a few years back, was built Aug. 10, '65 at SJ.  It had pink paint on the top (as installed in the car) of all 4 "U" bolts.  I know the build date was accurate, because I found a quality control line card under the original carpet, passenger front floor.

Hope this helps to add evidence to a possible pattern.

I found some new marks on the differential today, any ideas what these would be? The check mark looking marks are on the driver side, the number on the passenger.

My 66 coupe has the 610lb. springs with c4za-m number and 2 white stripes on them. Bill.

Always more difficult to tell from pictures but here is a shot - You'll have to confirm in person.

Passenger end looks like a "2" (upside down) and yes a check mark or a poorly finished "X". "2" in yellow and the check in white ? Possibly a secondary (on first) pink line under the bottom edge of the "2"

Drivers side  looks like a number "14"

Garth

Not sure if you have seen it in earlier post but, if your removing everything. if you spray some oven cleaner on the marks that will expand and highlight as they dissolve. Take a picture or two of them during the process since they go away fairly quickly at that point

Just a thought
