Did 6 cylinders and small blocks use the same tie rods in 1968? Thanks
-
Books (MPC, Moog & Raybestos) say yes. No personal experience - but looks good
BTW - Welcome

All used the same in 67-69.

This is nit picking but it is a concours forum. Although tie rod ends are the same 67-69 (except 69 w/ DO spindles) the boots had different engineering numbers on the rubber.

Yep, that is right!

Do all tie rods have the same shaped boot and the ring at the bottom?

The 67/8 style have the metal rings. Not sure when the later style was introduced. They are interchangeable from a function perspective.
-
I think the ones without the ring came into play in 70. Scott Fuller makes a real nice 67-9 version w/o any engineering marks.(can't really see them once installed anyway)
-
I bought an NOS one and it has a different looking boot, but does have the "B" stamping on the bottom. I guess I should get the ring style boot and take the other boot off?
-
The boots can be swapped with relative ease.

That would be the 69's with the KKX or D0 spindles ;)
-
Looked at my original inner tie rods and the part # on the boot is in large #'s. Much much different than the NOS ones you see. It is a C8 number.
How do you get the old boot off and put a new one on? It looks like the ring is attached pretty good to the base.
-
To remove the boot, tap the bottom metal edge with a piece of wood or use a chisel if you don't care about re-use.
-
When you posted that 6 cyl and small blocks used the same tie rod in 68 does that mean that all 68's used the same tie rod 6 cyl, small and big block or did big blocks get a different tie rod?
-
All used the same regardless of engine size.

Pete Morgan

Peter thanks.

I believe the metal ring boot was used up until very late 69 production when it was changed to the ringless rubber boot.Bob
