Title: Help with points adjustment
Post by: JimL on February 15, 2010, 05:57:29 PM
Hey guys.  Long story short, I'm missing something.  I just replaced the points and condenser in my '66 289 A code.  It started BEFORE I changed them.  I should have photographed everything first. Now I just turn over and over.  Questions:  Do both the Condenser wire and ground wire go to the small 10/32 nut located on the points 'frame?'   Second:  I read that the gap is .018 at the high point.  Am I too wide or something?  Help!  I broke a perfectly running car by doing maintenance!!!!
Thanks in advance--Jim

one end of the ground wire goes to a points mounting screw and the other to the breaker plate. i usually set my gap to .017. make sure the faces of the points are not contaminated.

OK, ground wire comes off 10/32 nut and goes under the mounting screw.  I'll go try that.  Thanks!  Jim

Another thing to check is that the contact surface of the points is clean.  Sometimes the contact surface has a thin coating of grease or other substance to protect them and that will not allow the spark to travel.
