Does anyone happen to have an FE column out that can provide a picture of where the shaft exits where tube? I have a feeling my tube is distorted and I need to correct it before paint.

Jeff, I don't think there are enough pictures to make a determination. Could you post more?  8)  Thank you, precisely what is needed. Thank you!  There is no rubber that goes on the end of the column tube?

Keith, if you look at a NPD catalog IIRC they have the part for the end of the tube.

This pictured online, looks to fit the non-FE cars and NOT what Keith is needing. It fits 65-67 small block, inline six cars with the long shaft gear boxes.

I'm not convinced there was ever anything at the base of these columns NOR the tilt columns for that matter. I have seen a claim that there may have been a foam insert used (like 69-70's have), but not confirmed as original for a 67 FE Mustang or tilt wheel 67.

Maybe they just all dried up and fell out after a few years?

I bought just the part you gentlemen pointed out from NPD. Does it fit? Yes. Does it belong there, now that is the question. I didn't see any evidence that there was one on any of those columns, however with that said: The picture with the frame pivot is indeed a small block vehicle, based on the location of the frame pivot, yet lacks the seal. Do they just slide from the tube and rot and fall off, or do they not belong?

I'll eagerly await an answer so I can make a command decision on if to use the rubber in the end of the tube, or not....

Not shown on the 67 Chassis Assembly Manual. NPD say yes, Ford say no.

As I said in my earlier post, the NPD part looks to be for the standard steering column used on early 67 Mustangs , more like the 65 and 66 long shaft steering boxes. The type of steering column that Keith is using is found on only Big Blocks in early production 67 cars.

I will upload a picture of the 3564-1a grommet that NPD is selling but in all honesty this should not be used on his car.

Here is what I know about the tilt column end bushing I have owned our SJ  11-04-66 67 GTA convertible for 17 years and before that is was stored in a basement for 15 years a previous owner could have add the rubber bushing but it is doubt full. I think many just rotted and fell out. I am not sure if a non tilt would have used it but I see no reason why not.

In 68 Ford redesigned the standard and tilt column to be collapsible. The 68 tilt column has a hard plastic bushing that is almost always missing and it is different than the fixed column . I was very lucky to have found one that was usable. The first picture is the tan 67 and the second red is the 68. It is hard to understand why these bushings are not shown in the 67 & 68 FAM.

Never seen on one any rag joint steering shaft column

I know it wasn't there when I took the car apart, however with that said; The PO's kid probably damaged the end of it when his sternum hit the steering wheel. It was bent into a teardrop shape where the shaft exits the tube. I do not have tilt, just the short shaft box with a rag joint.

It is hard to understand why these bushings are not shown in the 67 & 68 FAM.

Most likely because it was considered part of the column assembly. I found some photos at Muscle Car Research, apparently they reproduce them. P/N C8AZ-7347-B. (Their site says down for maintenance until April 9: I saw found in a Google image search, not firsthand)
