65 Valve Stems and Wheel Weights
« on: July 14, 2010, 01:35:43 PM »
Can anyone verify (preferably from an original spare) the original length of the valve stem on a 65 steel wheel/hubcap car?

How about wheel weights?  Were the wheels balanced by installing weights on inside and outside of wheel or just the inside?  This may seem like a strange question, but I know that 63-67 Corvettes never used wheel weights on the outside of the wheel.

I tried to look at some vintage pictures with no luck.

My observations have been that all the valve stems were standard 1.5" in length.  For certain wheel covers, extensions were used in varying lengths.

Used to think Ford used wheel weights on the outer rim, but been finding original tire/wheels with only inside weights.

Thanks for your reply, Charles.  Both are interesting observations.

Seen the weights only inside and those cars with inside and out. Always hard to figure if those details have been changed IMHO after all these years on original cars

Just an observation

Here is a picture of my original spare. There are weights on the front and two weights on the back.
I know it's not a steel wheel but just some info.

Were Cragars installed by Shelby or Ford on '65 GT350's?

I have seen many original photos of GT350's, and since the Cragars were installed at Shelby American, they always seem to have weights that can me seen on the outside.  The cars came with the painted steel wheels from Ford, and I have never seen an original picture that shows the weights on the front of any 65-66 GT350 steel wheels.

If I am reading this correctly, 65 cars used 1.5" length valve stems on the steel wheels. Is this also true for the styled steel wheels or just the steel wheels that used wheel covers? I have noticed that some vendors advertise the 1.25" length valve stems for styled steel wheels. What gives?
Thanks for your reply.

I was under the impression that the standard length valve stems were 1 1/4" for all wheel types, and the plastic extensions with metal insides were used on full wheelcover cars of some length......

I've got the 1 1/4" on my '65 SS wheels along with the correct Dill crowned caps.
