69 MACH 1 390 Dress Up Kit Identification
« on: February 16, 2021, 04:15:26 PM »
I have read that the Marti report denotes if the car had the chrome dress up kit on it or not however I am not sure what heading in the Marti would cover that.  Any ideas?  When I pulled this car from its long sleep in a garage from 1984 to present, I found chrome correct dated valve covers but a blue original looking air cleaner complete with correct 390 sticker on it.  Not sure which was original to this car and which was not.  Trying to get all correct items for a 390 isn't easy!

Thanks

1969 S code dress-up option is an interesting one. can't think of another time where buyers had this option that was installed at the factory. Could create a rabbit hole for the discussion if we try and figure out if the engines arrived at the car plant with the chrome parts attached to the engine (not referring to the air cleaner and breather). If so then was the engine ID tag or label different? Like I said rabbit hole :)

Did look at my pictures of unrestored cars and I found it interesting that on Dearborn S codes with the dress up options (valve covers and breather visible) the air cleaner lids with painted while on NJ cars the air cleaner lid was chrome. Not allot of examples but consistent

No good examples of unrestored San Jose examples only a few restored ones

That's very interesting because mine has chrome valve covers but a painted air cleaner including lid.  HUH   Maybe it came that way??   Do you know where I can obtain pics of unrestored San Jose 390 Mach 1 cars?   So many little things to get right when putting it all back together.  Original pics especially engine compartment would certainly help!

Not going to be allot of unrestored 69 San Jose S codes available. Good thing is that many of the 428 details are the same or similar just have to double check those. Things like the Thermactor system (minus may be the pump pulley) and the like. The rest of the engine compartment will be the same as any other Mustang built around the same time at San Jose. You might want to look at some of the

Currently there are two unrestored San Jose examples in the Unrestored Picture Thread section of the site that should help. Maybe I can find one or two more to add to the group. Won't be an S code though :(

Thermactor system was not used on the S code 390 in 1969 Jeff. It's an IMCO engine, the 1969 390-4V IP has a one year only intake manifold and a one year only 470 CFM Autolite carburator.

Thanks Royce - corrected above and forgot for the moment.

Think the one set of pictures of the restored car with Thermactor stuck in my head for some reason::)  Just one of the reasons I normally don't collect those

4300 Autolite.

Books say
C9ZF-E for manual transmissions   C9ZE-F for automatic cars

Edit note: Corrected the prefix on each  ::)

That one is easy - No its not correct for your car.

Here is what you want (specific number will be determined by your transmission)

Your 1969 390-4V IP would have blue painted valve covers, a black oil cap, and blue painted air cleaner lid originally. If it was equipped originally with the chrome dress up kit option it would say that in the options list on the Marti Report.

The Master Parts Catalog gives a description of the items included with the Engine compartment chrome dress up kit.

I would start with getting the Marti Report unless you are just wanting to see chrome under the hood.

Thanks
