69 Grande stripe
« on: August 28, 2013, 10:32:39 PM »
Looking for either (1) a source for Grande stripes, or (2) detailed pictures to give us a shot at reproducing.  Any and all help appreciated.

What color?  Think there was a set of NOS ones in my NOS boxes I moved from the other place.

Wished I had asked the last couple of owners who restored Grande's where they got their stripes. :(

Will find the kit I have to see what color they are - the stripes have a inner and outer section so there are two colors in the combination.  Often the black is the last color left after all these years of exposure to the elements

Some examples

Nelson's restored 428CJ Grande with black & gold

Original white and gold - 9R01H1474xx

Another black & gold 9F01H1227xx

Worn stripes from 9F01F1655xx

Worn stripes from 9R01H1148xx

Hello together,
let me introduce myself first: I am Frank, age 47, living in Germany and own a 1969 Mustang Grande (winter blue, white Vinyl roof, blue interior)  since September this year. It is in a real good condition and I am very happy with my Pony. Nevertheless some optimizations and repair work is still necessary.
One of this tasks is to add the stripes on the side. The car was painted in the 1990s and they did not attach the stripes after painting. So they are still missing.
The reason why I post here is that I am not sure, which colour the stripes had when the car left the factory.
I found a table in a Mustang datasheet in which I can read, they should be white (see next post - sorry, attachment did not work).
When I search for pictures in Google I only find winterblue cars with black stripes. Most shops only offer stripes in black/gold or gold/black. Now I found one shop which offers also white/gold.
Could anyone tell me if I am right and the white/gold is correct or has it been a black/gold one from factory?
Looking forward to your hints. Thanks in advance.
Greetings
Frank

Welcome Hope you find the support and information your searching for in relationship to correct restorations and details related to the subjects covered here on the site

Not certain where the table originally came from. It may be from one of the versions of the salesman guide. Like other things like this (interior and exterior color combinations come to mind) these were only suggestions and if you were ordering a car they would put what ever color stripe you paid for on the car built to your specifications. Now if you were buying the car off the lot it was likely built to Fords suggested combination since their sales studies believed those would be the most popular.  So IMHO there is no one "correct". For "correct" or what was original you would need to have an original copy of the buildsheet. Don't know that Ford kept records of the stripe colors on Grande's but don't see, on copies I have, the colors mentioned on Marti reports or original shipping invoices or window stickers. Lastly I don't think the stripes were included on the buck tags

While we're revisiting this subject I thought this might be a good time to post some additional unrestored examples of color combinations to hopefully help others

Thanks for your reply, Jeff. This helps me to understand how the process worked in the 60s. I think the build sheet is no more present in my car. I already had a look under the dash and haven't seen one. So I will choose the stripes like FORD suggested and choose White.
The datasheet I mentioned I found during my searches in the internet. See attachment.
Possibly it could be a sales datasheet.

Hi all.
Finally i bought the Stripes which most of the cars on the pictures seema to have: black with gold accent. Another reason was that i did Not find a company which sells black with white accent.
Now I mounted the stripes on my pony and what did I find? At the inner Side of the passenger door there is a small rest of the original Stripes... Black with white accent...  ::). So I will continue to search the correct one for my car...

I have been watching Grande's for years. Most end up painting them on. Two things I have noted:
- The insert stripe gets wider at the rear quarter panel. This is often missed when painting them on.
-The overall strip width also increases going from front to back.
- There is a cut out around the door handle. I have not noticed this until recent years so my data is limited and needs to be verified.

NOS Strip kits show up now and then. Probably a lot of them are not reinstalled after painting.

Nice find though it just adds to the challenge but just another to overcome.

Allot of parts get reproduced when an owner can't find what they need and takes on the challenge

Good luck with your choices
