Title: Correct style styled steel wheels
Post by: fast66 on January 30, 2012, 02:50:31 AM
Hi there,
Just got myself a -66 Fastback again. This one is built 30th Nov -65 in Metuchen. Which style of SS wheels would be correct for this car?
IIRC tha wheels with trim ring (66 style) were available sometime late fall of -65, does anyone know the cut over date?
thanks,
Claes

Think you would be fine with either, but the normal '66 style would probably yield the least amount of questions.

Thanks Charles, just thougt I remembered - possibly from a VMF post a long time ago - that it was sometime in December (wishful thinking maybe)

Think that anything up to maybe October '65 might be ok without documentation.

My San Jose Oct 65 build came with the 66 style wheels. The original dual red line spare is still in the trunk. Just for reference.

Mine is Metuchen, but I guess it is just outside of what would be 100% correct if using the 65 style wheels..
Thanks,
Claes

My Unrestored 2 owner 1966 K code fastback has styled steel wheels as stated on the original window sticker. The build date is 30J. Although these wheels do not use trim rings I was told they are original to the car. The paint is charcoal not bright silver. I'm thinking that because of it's early production date, they are correct. Thoughts ?

Found this post while searching so I'll agree with the seller that these are the original wheels.

if you have an early 66, say, built before January of 1966, then the 65 wheels are acceptable in MCA concours judging.

besides, if you installed the trim rings on chrome rims you would scratch the hell out of the chrome... and we wouldnt want that would we? (http://www.concoursmustang.com/forums/images/icons/wink.gif)

What plant? My San Jose Mid Oct build 66 Fastback has the "66" style (with trim rings) from the factory, including the spare with the original dual red line tire still mounted. I got this info from the original owner.

Cool, that's a really nice piece, don't see them very often.

Over on one of "the other" forums, a Poster had a question as to what SSW (with or without Trim Rings) would be correct for his December built 1966. One of the long time members of that forum, with many thousand Posts, replied that the C6ZZ SSW, with the Trim Rings was available October 1, 1965. While I haven't checked my TSB's, Marketing Action Guides or Service Merchandising News yet, in all of my other information, the earliest that I can document the C6ZZ's as being available is November 1, 1965, in the Ford List Price Book bearing that date (which probably means that it was printed before then, and possibly the C6ZZ's were available before then).
I contacted the Poster who had replied with the October 1, 1965 date, asking him for some documentation of the October 1 date. He replied that he had been looking for that himself, as he thought that he had seen it in some Dealer Books, to which he no longer had access.

In searching our Forum, the best I could find was that C5ZZ wheels were acceptable by MCA rules for build dates prior to January 1, 1966, and that a previous owner of one of our Members' cars had said that the C6ZZ wheels were original to his October xx built '66.

Does anyone have any printed documentation that supports the C6ZZ SSW being available prior to November 1, 1965 ?

Thanks,

Bob

Documentation no, but my San Jose Oct 65 18th build (scheduled) K GT Fastback was ordered with, and came with, the 66 Style Steel Wheels, all five. I know the two previous owners personally, we all worked together, and that's their statement. The original owner still wants "his" car back. My answer is still - no.

Title: 66 Steel Style Wheels question
Post by: Morsel on April 06, 2018, 03:58:56 PM
In your opinions, would it be better to have repop correct 66 Steel Style wheels running on a 66 car, or would you prefer to see a set of 67 Original Steel Style wheels on a 66. I've been searching for a set of original 66 wheels for some time, but haven't located any and a set of 67 original ones have appeared...

All opinions welcome... I probably know the answer already, "just be patient" ;)

Thanks,

Jason

BEWARE of used wheels! I have 14 of the 67 version and guess how many run anywhere near round!

IMHO Given your car and other choices just buy some reproductions and move on to other needs

Yeah, I already have repro ones, just been hunting for originals for some time... and with how I'm doing my car, I would eventually want some proper original wheels if I can ever find them...

Thanks for the input fellas, letting them pass by.

Yes, we did! and given that there is no spin-test mentioned, your odds of getting straight wheels and a straight deal are getting fairly slim
