1966 disc brakes
« on: April 06, 2018, 03:09:08 PM »
I am contemplating adding original disc brakes to my 66' coupe. I had a few questions that I am unsure of. First, I am using original 66' styled steel wheels. Can I assume that these would have no issue being used with disc brakes?? Secondly, am I correct in that every disc brake car had a proportioning valve?? And if so should I find an original or would a,  (dare I say it), aftermarket  :-[ work fine with the original disc brakes??
Thanks for a reply.

The styled steel wheels will clear the disc brakes.

Yes every factory disc brake car had a proportioning valve

Yes you can use an aftermarket - but it will stand out in an otherwise stock looking car. Would not recommend (heck look what site we're on ;)  anything other than a factory like one. IF your considering making "improvements" might as well toss the master cylinder, then the ...........  ::)

Thanks Jeff. Not trying to offend the purists here but I can't even come close to stopping like the other folks with their modern cars so since I will be driving this car often I feel the need for braking improvements. I want to keep the appearance as close to "original" as possible so I will see if I can locate/afford a rebuilt original. I already made the change to a dual master cylinder for safety reasons.  :(

One other question, are there specific "disc brake" spindles or will the V8 brake spindles interchange?

Its not about offending anyone here - it's about our focus.  Plenty of other places that focus more on trying to make these old cars "safer" and so on.  :)  No matter what you do their not going to be like new cars as far as safety. In general terms

Believe you will find no fit issues

The styled steel wheels will clear the disc brakes.
Original Ford Style Steel Wheels should clear. About 15-20 years ago, there was an interference fit with aftermarket SS wheels and Ford factory disc brakes. I would think that those wheels are now few and far between. Just a heads up.
