anyway to tell if one is an orig?
any date codes?
talking about a June 70 dearburn power brake car....

Just reread your header and realized I should have responded slightly differently from what I did
Since the master cylinder was painted semi-gloss black with the rest of the brake cap and booster no marks (if any were applied) would be seen (they would be under the black paint.
There was a mark used to identify certain boosters and valve but that was way before the 70 production though we often see them applied incorrectly by restorers

I think Stu was referring to stamped date code numbers and potential manufacturer designation ?
Anyway, this is a tough nut to crack..
Talking about difficult, try running down info on a 70 Manual Drum Brake Master Cylinder ( Dearborn ).. According to the 70 shop manual, there's an I.D. mark stamped on the end of the MC.. Mine is stamped but nothing to compare to for I.D.

listed for a Boss 429 but would this not be same for any power front disc Mustang?

Have seen similar stampings on original master cylinders I've seen and on a couple I've removed but can't be sure if they were stamped on production line units
Possibly a service replacement or a factory rebuilder stamp for tracking purposes?

Don't always have the pictures labeled with their part number or specific application. Have some marked 70 and they appear to be for disc brake application but can not be sure its PB - but not allot of cars came with non-power disc brakes.
Could post - just can not be really sure

I would be curious to know if Ford made Master Cylinders or if they were all farmed out to Bendix / Raybestos or other vendors?
Speaking of 429 M.C.'s the shop manual lists a Mustang 429 at a 1inch bore, yet the ebay seller lists that one at 15/16 bore?

Easy one - like many of the parts than made up these cars (seat parts, steering items, tires.....) they were farmed out often with multiple vendors (Mr Ford hated single sourcing and never wanted to be restricted as he was in the 20's & 30's) Often the different suppliers provided the majority of their parts to specific assembly plants which explains why the specific details/parts different between plant to plant in the same time period

I have about 10 original master cylinders and can say for sure that all of them have a date code stamped on the bottom of the unit when the master cylinder was cast and all are Bendix units (I have not seen another source).
The master cylinders were also then stamped on the side to indicate when the units were assembled.
As for the link posted in this thread for the "Boss 429" master cylinder I doubt this is correct unless you have a 4 wheel drum brake car. If you look at those pictures what I see is the front and rear outlets are the same size (1/2 inch) which indicates a drum/drum car.

They are actually stamped into the metal....
