I know it's not Mustang but it comes from the Ford family and so it is related. I came across this steering wheel and it looks like 70 Mustang/Ford but the back doesn't match as it has no provision for steering wheel locking. I was wondering if anyone can shed light on it?

Possibly a 69 since they are often designed the same or similar just lack the locking steering column ring on the back side
Design is similar to a number of steering wheels of that year

I suspect you are right and the difficulty is that you rarely see the reverse side of steering wheels.

for sure a 69 Ford. Crest would be typical for a Galaxy or Custom. Emblem is replaceable to work on other models in 69.

There should be a two digit number, for the year, in the plastic on the back of one of the spokes. Is there a "69"?

Either something weird, or missing parts, as it has no horn contact rings ....

Unfortunately I didn't have time to find a date number or get better pics. I happened to be in a parts shed at night and the owner forgot about me and turned out the lights and I had to quickly stumble to the door. I didn't realise parts hunting was so dangerous!
The back confuses me and I think there must be something missing also. I was hoping that it was going to be a 1970 wheel but it looks like I am out of luck.
I was wondering, can you swap the horn and locking rings into other steering wheels or are they fixed from factory? Just curious to see if I can make use of it anyway.
