date and part number stamp on wiper motor
« on: January 31, 2012, 11:21:52 PM »
Anyone have an idea about wether the PN and date on the 1972 Mustang wiper motor was stamped or screened? Also, how much prior to the build date would seem reasonable for the date stamp/screen? Thanks, Chuck
Thanks, Chuck

Believe they were stamped

Examples I have look to be maybe 3 weeks prior to the cars date

Not many examples in the sampling

Thank you Jeff. Is there a preferred source for having the stamps made? Thanks, Chuck

If your going to do them correctly (so they look right) I have not found an easy way around doing the design yourself (given a good original example) and supplying that to a rubber stamp maker. If not they will substitute current letter fonts change the sizing and positioning often

I have a local place that I've used for 20 yrs and they understand not to change anything in the art work I provide or they eat the cost of the  stamps. On smaller/finer font designs (like coils for example) I provide the artwork on a disk or email to their layup person. Since everything is computerized  I get them back in two days at the longest since they no longer have to wait to fill up a sheet like the old days

For the wiper motor, do you have an example and does the print go on the side of the case or the end in 72? Have 71s with it on the side and 73's with it on the end.

I'd planned on doing the layout myself and providing it to a stamp maker. I don't yet have a stamp maker selected. The stamp is on the front side of the motor case like a 1971. Where do you buy the "ink" it seems like it is rather thick with high solids content. Thanks, Chuck
Thanks, Chuck

I walked my wrecking yard and this is what I found. Most of the wiper motors had illegible dates.
I only have Cougars, which were built in Dearborn, here is a list of 1971-73 wiper dates and corresponding door data plate dates.

Sept 23, 1970    10/70
Dec 1970            01/71
Mar 5, 1971        05/71
May 25, 1971     06/71
Oct   1971          10/71

I have a few more, but missing door tags or doors, would mean that I would have to look up the VIN's in the Kevin Marti Tag Book.

Scott, Thanks for the data, It seems 1 to 2 months prior to build date of the car is correct. Glad to meet you at least on the forum. I also have a 1969 Cougar. Thanks Again, Chuck
Thanks, Chuck

I can provide the name and contact info for the place I use if you would like (pm me)

As for ink I tend to use paint instead to get the thicker build up we often see though I do have a white ink pad I use for some ink stamps

Here is a sampling of mostly legible 1971-73 wiper motors. Color differences, letter spacing, and letter font size differences. Right side up/ upside down.
*Note - all pictures are from Dearborn built cars (Cougars)

And a shot of a June 73 (really late) stamped one

Thanks Jeff! The scale really helps. Chuck

Your welcome but it wasn't me - was done by whom ever provide it to me.

I've never found scales to be of much use in reproducing stamps instead I will print out a dozen or so different sizes (slightly larger or smaller) Print them out, trim them and stick them on the item or in the location and compare those to originals or pictures. Find that when I go just by measurement they are always off a bit.

Also decrease the size of your stamp since the print will increase in size as you press it to the item being stamped. Original stamps were smaller than what we see on the original item. The stamps you will be having made are shallower than originally so the increase will be less than the ten percent that you can get with other stamps

Hope this helps

As usual it does help. I never considered the "expansion" issue. Thanks again. Chuck
