66 San Jose Paint Break - Inner Fender at Cowl

Is there an alignment plane for how far the black extends on the inner fender towards the cowl?  From the pictures I have, it looks like the end of the black is roughly aligned with the "lip" on the firewall at the cowl, but I'm not sure.  I thought there had been a thread on this previously, but I couldn't find one.

This is a 9/65 scheduled build San Jose car.

Yes, roughly in line with the lip of the cowl.  If I had to guess, I would say San Jose used a cover of sorts that fit over the front to keep engine bay paint from getting on the exterior.

For you plant and period, as Charles mentioned the transisition from black engine compartment paint over the body color often lines up with the forward edge of the firewall to cowl pinchweld but just about always on the raised filler panel between the inner fendener panel and the cowl. The edge of the black paint is typically a soft edge rather than the brushed or taped edge we see at the other two plants


couple of handy examples - as they show - a straight line was not always produced due to what ever they used as a mask for the area
