Heater case markings
« on: February 24, 2014, 08:51:56 PM »
I just rebuilt my heater case for my 19 June 64 convertible with AC. I came across some white matkings on the top corner of the heater case and wondered if anyone has seen these before? It looks like "Y4FC". Could this be for 64, June, third week...something like that?

It's the original heater box, no cut out for the resistor on the front and marked with FoMoCo script in oval with a Y1 to the side.

I have several parts of various Heater Boxes; all have the Date Code stamped in white on the top and all in different locations. Yours looks just like the ones I have.

Nice job by-the-way! How did you get the case to look so nice?

I sprayed the whole thing down with Griot's rubber cleaner and wiped clean with a cloth. There was lots of rust residue on the inside, the outside was just a bit dirty.

Here are some pics of the "before" cleaning. I think the fan is original (shown repainted). It's marked Vernco Corp in an oval.

Did the Rubber Cleaner take the rust off of the Bracket Rivets too? Thanks for the photos and great Water Color Painting by-the-way...children's treasures.

The rubber cleaner did a good job on the case, inside and out, getting rid of all dirt and rust residue. The rivets were already pretty clean. The brackets are hard to clean being attached to the case. Best to tilt the case on the side and use a brush and cleaner to keep the harsher cleaner off the case. There are probably many speciality cleaners for rusty parts, but I always have heavy-duty carb cleaner on hand and it strips off rust and paint pretty well, especially with a little brush. You'll have to use something stronger for rust on the metal parts, like the carb cleaner. Take the metal parts off and clean separately. The rubber cleaner is good for the case itself.

The picture was done by my 5 year old:).

Chris-
I have a similar marking on my plenum, late June '64 build. Don't remember seeing anything on my heater box though.

Greg,

Thanks. That matches up with my heater box markings, Y4FC, and both our cars are scheduled build dates of June 64.

That is the typical one (yes seen these many times before)

Have seen them in white and yellow depending on year

There is also a very different stamp (similar pattern of letters and numbers)  that is larger and has dashes '-" between the digits Possibly from a second vendor/subcontractor/provider

I have three fans that I had plated (I don't like rust) and one has the Vernco markings, very faint, you can see part of the oval with  letters N and R only. The other two a have four embossed stress veins instead of five on the flat mounting surface and are stamped TORRINGTON and 408 AIROTOR. I think that all came from 65 or 66 cars as the associated motors are three speed (two wire). I cannot be certain that they are factory original or service replacements.

Checked and my fan has the 4 stress veins with stamped TORRINGTON and 408 AIROTOR markings.  This is for an Oct 64 San Jose car.  Can't guarantee it is original, but had original looking rust.  :)

When I removed the fan motor, it was marked with 1964 (that I could make out, see pic), had the part number, and the FoMoCo oval. It looked like it had never been removed. I'm guessing the Vernco Corp fan is original for my Dearborn 19 June 64 car. Looks like there could be differences in the fans used by plant.

When I redid my heater box last year, here are the markings I found.  Can't read them though

Here is the stamping on the fan motor as well, Sept 28, 1964:

Happened to glance at a 66 AC unit I have, and it's fans are stamped TORRINGTON as well, and also 3 13/16" AIROTOR.  Obviously Torrington must have been an OEM vendor.
