Water Pump Question
« on: March 10, 2014, 11:46:03 PM »
I have a 1966 289 4v V8 A code mustang, built on December 30, 1965 in San Jose. I believe I need to replace the water pump. There is a small leak I've seen on the floor, haven't located the cause yet but will look closer this weekend. If I do choose to replace the water pump can someone provide guidance on the proper water pump to install. During previous repairs to the car over the years I have come to learn that not everything was restored properly from previous owners so I would like to make sure I select the proper water pump to be installed. I have seen posts about cast iron or aluminum water pumps and details about which direction the impeller rotates. I just don't want to presume the type of water pump currently installed is the correct one. Any guidance would be appreciated.

You are looking for a cast iron water pump marked C6OE-A on the front upper housing and FOMOCO in a rectangle on the lower left part of the housing.

Thanks for the input. When I searched ebay I noticed some water pumps for the C60E-A advertised as either 6fin or 8fin on the impeller. Which is correct for my engine? Also some of the part numbers listed on ebay are listed as C6OE-8505, is this what I should be looking for?

C6OE-8505-A is the engineering design part number, C6OE-A is the casting number in raised letters on the pump which is the best (and only) means of identification. The housing is cast iron vs aluminum. It gets real crazy when you get to the service part numbers. You want the 8 vane, the 6 vane is the High Performance version used in high RPM applications.

You need a C5AE-8505-C casting water pump. The number is visible on the LH side of the impeller housing. Keep this change level number in mind for your engine - before change L-8.
