Title: Paint Codes for Engine Compartment Black and Red Oxide
Post by: travnemi on November 26, 2015, 12:37:54 AM
Is there a paint code for the black for the engine compartment and a paint code for the red oxide compartment? The reason I ask is because the is so many shades of black.

I have a 1967 GTA S code Dec 1966 Built in San Jose.

Thanks

Travis

For the red oxide there is nothing IMHO that will match (for either front or rear red oxide epoxy primer sealer) out of the can not formulas already figured out for all the variations. For the wife's car it took me playing for 6 months with my paint supplier to get an exact match - but don't expect others to do the same. Most likely you can start with the PPG/Ditzler DP product as a base as mentioned in responses to earlier request for the same then tinting it with exterior paint toners to get close if not right on.

As for engine compartment black I suggest you check to see what is legal to use in your area, what is available and read all the prior threads about the same subject.

I live in a low VOC region of the country and because of we were pretty much limited to Hot Rod black  - or some water based stuff

PS did change the title to better represent what your looking for

The black Ford engine compartment color is: 9000. It was mixed in Omni plus MBO. OEM Code: R4,M30J1724,M6124A,JASAXXA.
It's an acrylic urethane. I was able to have it mixed at English Color.
I also used Vintage Clear with the 4:1 hardner ratio which produces a semi-gloss clear. It's about 45.00 a quart.
Not only does it look correct, but the clear leaves a very tough finish.

I believe you'll find most of us prefer single stage paint instead of a topcoat of clear to get the most authentic appearance.

If two stage looks like one stage and is much more durable, why use it?
If you have a big block car you're more likely to understand the question.
You can't tell it's two stage, and with the vintage clear is looks spot on.
Just a thought. My vehicle is not going to spend it's life on a trailer, so while trying to remain pretty much as produced, I still want something that will also clean and detail easy.  This is the answer, and the 9000 is the ford black, however as you noted, I elected to go two stage for obvious reasons.
