Title: Newbie
Post by: CCP on April 12, 2016, 12:20:11 PM
Hi, my name is Pete Lacina, and I just joined the forum. I've been a member on the SAAC forum for a couple of years and it was suggested to check out this site for some more specific mustang information.
Not really sure where to post; I have some questions about a '66 GT i'm working on, and would appreciate any help.
                   Thanks, Pete.

Hope i'm in the right area. Here is my question. I'm working on a Dearborn built '66 convertible. It's an A-code 4-speed with a/c. I need to replace the radiator, but I'm not sure if it has the correct rad in it.
The number on the side braces is C6ZE-E. However the top tank does not look right to me. It is flat with a center fill neck. Any info or photos of what it should be would be greatly appreciated.
                                                            Pete.

Pete,
Welcome. Some pictures of your radiator would help. And you should get into the habit of including the plant, month, any options as well as year and model. San Jose did things different than Dearborn.

Thanks for the reply. The plant is Dearborn and other than the usual GT equipment, the car has a/c, power steering, 4-speed trans., and pony interior.According to the door tag, the build date is Jan. 16, 1966 ( 16A ).
                      Thanks, Pete.

The car actually belongs to the guy I work for now. Another story how I ended up here,  but the car is in the body shop and is close to paint. Will post some pics of it before and after ( soon, hopefully ).
Still need help with the original post question.
                                                                      Thanks, Pete.

Here is photo.

Might be a desert cooler. Look for markings on the drivers side mounting strap and the top tank - drivers side between the radiator cap point and the end of the side strap.

You'll find (if you read  Posting Questions - Just a reminder at the top of the page) its nice if you add your cars info to your signature. Without that we'll be asking you over and over when and where the car was built since we've found that is an important key in finding the correct answers for owners

Welcome - Hope we can provide your Concours related needs and answers

Looks like one of the "desert cooler"  radiators.

I'm not familiar with the term 'desert cooler'. Is that a Ford piece, or an aftermarket? There are no markings on the top tank that I can see, but the left side strap is stamped C6ZE-E, and there is a brass tag that reads Mc10-G-5. The lower tank is for a manual trans. I was just wondering if this is the correct rad for this car? If I have to replace it what should the correct rad look like?
 Thanks guys, appreciate the help.

                                                            Pete.

I'm going with the notion that a Dearborn Built A-code likely didn't originally even come equipped with Heavy Duty Cooling from the factory. I'd say it was upgraded.

I did spend 21 years in Southern California between 1977 & 1998...2 of those years owning a Radiator Shop in the magnificent Coachella Valley.

Desert Coolers" were a regular "upgrade" in my area.

Often times they were ordered in from Modine radiators. Modine was an original supplier to Ford for (at least) a majority of the west-coast early Mustangs.

Other times, we built them. The difficulty with exceeding 3-rows in a "build", was the original tanks wouldn't work. The straps usually did adapt to the transfiguration.

I'll concede that a Florida car MIGHT have received H.D. cooling  8)

If so, what should the correct rad look like?

Look here, see if it can help you:

update: I just looked and didn't notice a match to your build ifo there.

I'm rather surprised more "66 savvy" people have not chimed in yet...it will happen, I think

Desert cooler was basically the extra extra cooling option that few owners choose. Given what you provided it sounds like it could be the original and I would keep it based on what you posted here.

Think the issue is this thread is in the general discussion area not where we normally ask and answer questions. Often we'll split the thread when they take a new direction or the question dies on the threads (not usually :) and the question will get posted in the appropriate area and addressed there

CCP thanks for adding the info to your signature - sure helps

Thanks for the reply. How do I get my post to the appropriate thread. Just start a new thread in another area?
            Thanks again, Pete.

Some times it best to start fresh so feel free to post questions related to your 65 in the 65-66 section. The individual (Body, Drivetrain, Interior...) areas are designed for questions that span across a number of sections like a question or finding about 67-70 upper arms for example
