Hi Fellas
I bought some nice aircleaner decals from shelby parts. I got the straight Autolite decal to go on a March '65 level 7 chrome HiPo aircleaner.
Question is where to put it ? at the rear or on the drivers side. I assume that if the text is read from the outside it is upside down ?
Any thoughts appreciated ( Dearborn car)

Haven't seen any good original examples of that decal used on a hi-po air cleaner. Have a few '65 Shelby pics that show a curved decal.
-
That is strange, I have the curved on at the moment, I thought I was moving to be more correct with the straight.
Where is the curved fitted in your examples ? these being San Jose though, I dont know if it varied by plant?
-
The pic I have is a trunk-mount battery GT350.
-
Actually I have found that the vintage photos show the straight decal on 65 and 66 the curved. Not to say that the curved one wasn't used (stranger things can happen). It is just that from the photo evidence and field observation the straight decal was more common on a 65 GT350 then the curved. It is placed directly in the back so you had to read it looking through the gap between the hood and the cowl seal. that is how it was done on the SJ Shelby's. i don't know why Dearborn would be different seeing as they got the engines from the same Cleveland plant but maybe they are. Possible differences might spring from different (possibly like other parts) suppliers since the engines were not shipped with air cleaners (arrived from their supplier directly to each plant)
Just a thought ;)

Seems like a reasonable possibility. Bob

Would anyone happen to have some reference pics of the straight corner decal on a '65 hi-po? Another one of those details I thought I was comfortable with, but seem to be exceptions... as usual!
-
Gentlemen - thanks for the responses so far, would be great to see some period pics.
-
Pictures - of course
Examples of early and later (approx end of 64) cars
Also have found a number of original cars (San Jose 65 production) without any AUTOLITE decals) that I believe are as they were

Thanks Jeff
I notice that on all three the bottom right chequer on the HiPo decal is white - ho hum.
I think I am going to fit my square decal - until next year :-\

This is the decal that came on my NOS in the box air cleaner with the burgundy filter.

This Shelby American publicity photo has an air cleaner with a curved decal. Since this car hasn't yet had it's Shelby VIN tag installed I believe it to be one of the pre-production cars between 004-014. Maybe the earliest example of a curved decal I've seen.

......... I believe it to be one of the pre-production cars between 004-014. ....
Of course (just a pet peeve ;) if it was 004-014 then they would have been producing the cars so they making them production cars ;D
-
Yeah, yeah, I know....the wording does seem a little confusing :-\. These were perhaps referred to more accurately ??? as "advance production prototypes". Still a pretty early car to have a curved decal.... ;)
-
it looks like it is curved in this picture.
This picture is from the 1965gt3350mustang.com site.

That would be a Sept 64 car

003 had an October scheduled date!

003 had an October scheduled date!
Yep, plus since the picture shown above was likely taken in early June 1965 who knows if it was the original air cleaner that came on the car from San Jose.

Thanks Bo
I am going square !!!!!
Now if the mods dont open fire - do you have a shot of the 289 HP decal on that same cleaner ? ;D
-
Can anyone tell if the cars in this pic have the straight one or the curved one?
Kind of looks like there curved.

Mark,
The 289 Hi Performance Decal never came in the box with the air cleaner
I got in a trade. Don't know if it was supposed to or if somebody took it from the box
prior to me getting it. The Autolite Decal was already mounted on the lid so I tend to
believe the 289 Decal wasn't a part of the package. The number on the box
was C5 something -W. The 289 Decal I use is from Jim Cowles.

Hi Bo
Thanks for letting me know. I will put the square Autolite on, Just looked at my 289 HP decal, it has no part number, has a glossy sheen, and a white bottom right chequer as have all the others I've seen.
Jims is very nice and as you know the chequers are the other way round.
In the grand scheme of things not a major worry :)
Just tryin to get it right thas all.
Thanks to all.

B. Perkins had some of the decals with part number on them and the white corner. This is what I plan on using on the K convertible.
-
I did not realise Bob was a seller of such items. do you have a any contact info thanks.
-
http://www.perkinsrestorations.com he's got all sorts of mustang stuff. check it out. he's a poster here but it is best to call him for parts & such.
-
I think he recently had some of the decals on ebay, so he may still have some for sale.
-
Charles I appreciate the help
Regards
Mark
PS I have just worked out I am 5 hours ahead of you guys here ;)
-
Charles,
Does the decal Bob sells have the cellophane cover over it like Jim's do.
See picture.
Could you post a picture of Bob's, please?
Thanks,
Texas Swede

I can't tell, but the design is exactly like original, including the farthest right corner of the checkerboard being white and the last 'H' in HIGH being aligned with the edge of the checkered flag pattern on the left. I actually had one of Jim's stuck to the air cleaner lid until I started comparing it to original pictures and realized the ones I got from Perkin's were dead on for the design. The only thing about those that look a little odd is the background color is a little more on the reddish side than orange.
Here's a pic I took of the air cleaner tonight, with the decal I got from Bob on it:
-
Thanks Charles,
Will order one from Bob tomorrow.

I think the one Jim does is very nice, but possibly off a different pattern, maybe used in '66?

Thanks for the link.
I tried it but it seems to be broken at the mo.

i'm getting the same error.

Got my 289 HiPo Air Cleaner Decal from Bob Perkins yesterday and it's now attached
to the lid after removing the one from Jim. The funny thing is that I removed one
that looks exactly like the one I got from Bob to attach the one from Jim many years ago. Still have the one I removed to compare with Bob's and they are identical.
Bought that one from a company called Super Ford Enterprises or something 20 years ago. They charged me $1028 instead of $28 on my credit card and it took a long time to get the money back but I did.
