I have a 64 1/2 Mustang coupe built on July 17 / 64 in Dearborn. I'm looking for the correct fender bolts. The car is pretty original and I currently have black bolts with black lock washers.
However, in all the shows that I've been to, I'm the only car with black bolts with lock washers. Is this correct Most other 65's at stainless steel with flat silver washers. I have purchased a set of these bolts (aftermarket), but want to make sure I'm not going away from the original.
Any ideas or comments ?

Both styles are correct with varying head markings. Do yours with the disc washers have something like a wavy flag logo?
The original finish would have been phosphate/oil. There's lots of info on that here on this forum and some DIY instructions.
If you don't want to bother with re-finishing, AMK products sells some pretty nice reproductions. www.amkproducts.com

I have a late June car however it is not where I can look at it ATM. I can say 100% from memory they bolts are all original and they do vary.

Just to clarify, the stainless steel bolts with silver flat washers you have seen on other cars are definitely incorrect. The issue others are referencing is whether they should have star or round washers under the heads and which head marking. They will be gray/black color phosphate and oil finish no matter which style.

Thanks rockhouse66, I should have been more clear. What I get for posting on sinus meds.
What rockhouse66 said is what I ment to say.

Here is a picture (well clearest) of a car close to your projected build date - same plant. Hope it narrows down the possibilities a bit. No big head markings of the fender bolts on this car or a couple of others around that time

Thanks Everyone,
Jeff - my bolts look like the one in your photo - only mine are completely gloss black rather than the nice rust colour pictured :-)
The bolt threads were left untouched, so over time a small rust stain crept up around each bolt head. In the past, I removed each bolt, treated with WD-40. This seems to have stopped this problem.
So what I hearing is that I should stick with my original bolts, they should be blasted clean, and then gray/black color phosphate and oil finish added (including the threads) - can someone confirm ?
Thanks again everyone !

That's what I would do (and did on my own car).

That is what I am also doing to my June and Sept 64 cars.
