HIPO connecting rods?
« on: January 12, 2015, 02:57:55 PM »
A friend of mine just purchased a large parts collection from an estate and included is a block with a VIN # stamped on the side of the block plus it has the HIPO main caps.  Other than that it is a bare block. In other parts is a set of connecting rods.  Other than the bolts holding on the rod caps, what is the difference between a standard connecting rod and a HIPO rod?  I assume the bolt hole is larger but are there any other differences?

Casting numbers are the same, C3AE-D. They are machined different than the standard to accept the 3/8 bolts. This results in a different inventory part number.

With consideration of the balancing is there any reason that you would not bore out the bolt holes on standard connecting rods and caps to accept the 3/8s bolts?  Are they physically identical in size (except for the holes) to a standard rod?

Yes, you're right on the main body of the rod, but the rod end caps are unique to a hi-po.
