kickdown lever for 64 1/2 V8 260
« on: February 08, 2015, 07:38:08 PM »
Looking for the source or part # for the correct kickdown lever/bracket for my 260 auto.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  I believe the attached pic is the correct part.

That's a tough part to find.  I know, I've been there.  It is not reproduced but they are available.  Make sure you check eBay.  I see them for sale from time to time.  I bought a 260 V8 engine with a C4 auto trans out of a rotted 64 1/2 Mustang to get that part.  It worked out really well for me.  I got my linkage then parted out the engine and trans.  Actually made money on the deal.  In my search, I found a parts guy in Florida (about a year ago) that had the part but it wasn't cheap.  Here is the info if you want to check them out.  Mustang Masters, telephone number 904-724-3927.  Good luck.

I'll second that.  Buyer beware.

I didn't buy the part from them because I felt like they were trying to rip me off.  IIRC he wanted $250 for the bellcrank, kick down rod that goes to the trans and bracket that attaches to the trans.  $175 if I wanted only the bellcrank.  I kept looking and I'm glad I did.  Believe it or not that 260 I bought had an original 4201S fuel pump on it.  Jackpot!

How 'bout a kick-down lever for a 64 1/2 289 (D code)?
Had the engine and trans rebuilt last year (among other stuff done) and that's still one of the things we're looking for.

Give Chris at Route 66 Pony Works in Albuquerque a call.  505-268-1588.  After I bought mine he said he found one but I didn't verify if it's 260 or 289.  Mike

The kick down linkage is the same for 64 1/2 and 65 Mustangs.  It's the same kick down linkage for a 260 and 289 with a C4.  All parts are interchangeable between years and engine sizes as noted above.

Cool.  thanks for all the good info.  I think I saw it listed in an NPD catalog last year, but didn't follow up on it.
My builder was giving me the impression that it wasn't an easy thing to find.

Throttle linkage parts are reproduced.  Maybe that's what you saw in the NPD catalog.  As far as I know, kick down linkage parts for 64 1/2 and 65 Mustangs with a V8 and C4 are not reproduced.  From my personal experience, obtaining the complete kick down linkage setup for a 64 1/2 or 65 at a reasonable cost, takes some effort.  It took me a couple of months of searching and tracking down leads via email and phone calls.  Kick down linkage parts come up on eBay from time to time.  I eventually found what I needed on craigslist.

Keep in mind the 66 Mustang kick down linkage is different from 65.  One option you can consider is converting to the 66 style kick down (cable vs a rod) but this would not be correct for a 65 Mustang and requires switching out additional parts.  Keep looking, something will turn up.

Thanks for the additional info.  I'm still looking.  Not in a major hurry, haven't needed to pass anyone on the freeway yet, so it hasn't been something needed.
