67 Front Window Channel & Plastic Guide, Felt Replacements
« on: April 27, 2018, 09:33:19 AM »
Finally getting to disassembling my doors and noticed my guide channels have a plastic strip on the top that guides the glass (up/down), one broken off and the other is cracked (see pictures.

Replacement guides look to come with a FELT (whiskers) pad on them instead of plastic. (I noticed a post on 68's have the whiskers type) and I see just the "Whisker Strip" available aftermarket. (NPD calls them: WINDOWFELTS, Door Window Rear Guide repro, 222A58-1A)

I have used doors in addition to the original doors that are this early, plastic type. The question remains if theay are not cracked too.

I am wondering, since I already need to place an order, if there is a way or recommendation of repairs that others have already done. I don't see any point in buying the whole channels but wonder what others suggest.

I didn't have to do anything to my channel/ Guides but clean them up. As you already noticed they are nylon and riveted on. I have yet to see any replacements for the '67 nylon units.

Hello Richard,

Fortunately, mine isn't broken or cracked.
But since the plastic is only needed on the outside (= visible side) to guide to glass smoothly in the channel, wouldn't it be a solution to adhere a small patch of polyester cloth at the inside of the plastic?
So you can hold the cracked pieces together and I know there are enough kits on the market for restoring broken plastic pieces (= fill up the gap between the broken pieces).
If you cut the polyester small enough, it wouldn't be visible on the outside?
Just my opinion.
Also, much durable but most likely more expensive... 3D printing?
Kind regards,

First of all, It isn't plastic, it's Nylon. NOTHING glues nylon. There is no repair, other than perhaps a sacrificial unit that is rusted or bent and you could remove the nylon and rivet it to your original.

I have used doors in addition to the original doors that are this early, plastic type. The question remains if they are not cracked too.

AND, this weekend I dismantled the extra doors too....Low and behold, BOTH are cracked also! As Keith mentioned, I'm not thinking nylon holds up well to repairs.

Soon, I'll place the NPD order and order the felt pads with it which they have available. I am hoping they can be affixed to the 67 window channel.

Swing & a MISS!

The felt strips are just 4 -inch long flat hunks, similar to the beltline whiskers with staples to secure them. The 67 window guide nylons are shaped 90-degrees so a flat strip is of little help.

Does anyone have any pictures of an original late or 68-style with the felt strip? I am tempted to rivet or bolt a section of angle bracket to these and staple the felt on but would like to see what I should be building if a member has a close-up of this area.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe not a Concours modification...but without replacement nylons or other known good used parts it was the best I could come up with. #hiddenanyways

I noticed a post on the FB forum about which is correct -- felt or nylon guide?
I have 2 early March cars with their original nylon.

NPD offers a black plastic (?) replacement guide including the runner with a note that it  has the "has incorrect plastic window wiper". Perhaps they meant color?

Anyway, I wonder if this is yet another 67 change as some are saying they have cat whiskers on the rear guide and others nylon.

Richard -- So you are saying it was a running change in [late?] 67 and standardized in 68?
I wonder if the change applied across all factories?

Based on my two SJ cars it wasn't in early March!

I had a 67 SJ 11-04-66 that had the plastic guides.
