Air cleaner decals - HiPo March 65
« on: August 02, 2010, 03:29:34 PM »
Hi Fellas
I bought some nice aircleaner decals from shelby parts. I got the straight Autolite decal to go on a March '65 level 7 chrome HiPo aircleaner.
Question is where to put it ?  at the rear or on the drivers side. I assume that if the text is read from the outside it is upside down ?
Any thoughts appreciated ( Dearborn car)

Haven't seen any good original examples of that decal used on a hi-po air cleaner.  Have a few '65 Shelby pics that show a curved decal.

That is strange, I have the curved on at the moment, I thought I was moving to be more correct with the straight.
Where is the curved fitted in your examples ? these being San Jose though, I dont know if it varied by plant?

The pic I have is a trunk-mount battery GT350.

Actually I have found that the vintage photos show the straight decal on 65 and 66 the curved. Not to say that the curved one wasn't used (stranger things can happen). It is just that from the photo evidence and field observation the straight decal was more common on a 65 GT350 then the curved. It is  placed directly in the back so you had to read it looking through the gap between the hood and the cowl seal. that is how it was done on the SJ Shelby's. i don't know why Dearborn would be different seeing as they got the engines from the same Cleveland plant but maybe they are. ........... i don't know why Dearborn would be different seeing as they got the engines from the same Cleveland plant but maybe they are.

Possible differences might spring from different (possibly like other parts) suppliers since the engines were not shipped with air cleaners (arrived from their supplier directly to each plant)

Just a thought ;)

Seems like a reasonable possibility. Bob

Would anyone happen to have some reference pics of the straight corner decal on a '65 hi-po?  Another one of those details I thought I was comfortable with, but seem to be exceptions... as usual!

Pictures  - of course

Examples of early and later (approx end of 64)  cars

Also have found a number of original cars (San Jose 65 production) without any AUTOLITE decals) that I believe are as they were

This is the decal that came on my NOS in the box air cleaner with the burgundy filter.

This Shelby American publicity photo has an air cleaner with a curved decal.  Since this car hasn't yet had it's Shelby VIN tag installed I believe it to be one of the pre-production cars between 004-014.  Maybe the earliest example of a curved decal I've seen.

Of course (just a pet peeve ;) if it was 004-014 then they would have been producing the cars so they making them production cars   ;D

Yeah, yeah, I know....the wording does seem a little confusing  :-\.  These were perhaps referred to more accurately ??? as "advance production prototypes".  Still a pretty early car to have a curved decal.... ;)
