Coil Cover - Vehicle Emission Decal

(1/1)

Another interesting detail is the coil cover and more specifically the associated vehicle emission decal.

Owning several SVO's over the years I have managed to collect a few "spare" parts. Recently while working on my low mileage '86 example I was curious about finding a better looking decal. Not quite as easy as I first thought.

For the 1986 model year, the engineering number on the back of the plastic coil cover is E6ZB-14A088-AA. I have found three different emission decals used;

    E6AE-9C485-AFM     this appears to be used in the US with the exception of California
    E6AE-9C485-AFN      this is used in California
    E6AE-9C485-AFP      this is used in Canada

According the 1986 MPC, the part number for the coil cover is listed as E5SZ-14A088-A for '85 and up.

For the 1985 model year, the engineering number on the back of the plastic coil cover is E5ZB-14A088-AA. I only have one emission decal example;

   E5AE-9C485-CGT

I have a coil cover with the engineering number on the back of E4ZB-14A088-AA, but unfortunately the decal is missing. I am assuming it is for the '84 model year.

Looking at the available options for the 2.3L TC SVO emission decal from Jim Osborne, I see the following;

   1986    E6AE-9C485-AAP
   1985    E5AE-9C485-CUM
   1984    E4AE-9C485-ALV

Focusing on 1986, I am curious what the difference is between the letter designation AFM vs AAP.

Here is a picture of an NOS E6AE-AFM decal vs. the Jim Osborne reproduction.

From the picture online, it appears to be close, with the exception of the text in the bottom right box. Close, but not exact.

Another interesting detail...

Attached is an overall picture of the '84 style coil cover (less the emissions decal). Note the top "fold" actually extends out past the lower portion of the cover by about 1/2". The '85 and '86 styles are flush from the fold down to the lower tabs.

Good stuff, I'll have to check mine out!
