1968 Shelby GT500 KR Steering and Suspension Detailing
« on: September 24, 2013, 09:44:03 PM »
Hi, thanks again for the help on the rear end and unibody.

I am now working on the front suspension and steering. I have a fair bit of information on the correct equipment and cosmetics for the front suspension for the KR.

Again, it is a June 3, 1968 build (Metuchen) and it is a convertible.

I have not found as much info on the steering components so I wanted to check with the experts on proper detailing.

* Sway bar - Chassis Black (?);
* Sway bar bushing holders - ?
* Sway bar end links - natural steel un-painted - ?
* Steering box, pitman arm, centre link, inner and out tie rods - natural cast finish (?);
* Steering column (behind the dash through fire wall) - ?
* Tie rod adjustment sleeves - natural steel - ?
* Power steering - not sure what the right colour is for the control valve and power cylinder - ?
* Power steering reservoir and pulley - blue and black respectively - ?

Again, thanks so much for your help.

Best

* Sway bar - Chassis Black (?); - Semigloss black

* Sway bar bushing holders - Natural untreated sttel

* Sway bar end links - natural steel un-painted - believe (Tim will add in if needed) bolt and spacer plated cad/zinc

* Steering box, pitman arm, centre link, inner and out tie rods - natural cast finish (?)

Steering box (check for threads) is a combination of cast main body, bright machined surfaces, zinc/cad plated end plug, natural steel cover, dark hardened cover bolts, bright machined shafts and spines

Center link and main tie rod bodies - darker heat treated forged steel. Tie rods have brighter machined caps, exposed shafts bight machine natural steel

* Steering column (behind the dash through fire wall) - Natural steel with natural steel attachment plate to rag joint. Blued weld and areas near weld

* Tie rod adjustment sleeves - natural steel - Yes new steel look - not as dark as tie rods

* Power steering - not sure what the right colour is for the control valve and power cylinder - ?

Do another search - a number of pictures and articles

Ram - natural with blued seam running length wise and ends where the tube was attached to the ends
Control valve - combination of fresh cast iron, cast aluminum and new steel spacer. Cast iron section has bright fresh machined surfaces

* Power steering reservoir and pulley - blue and black respectively - Depends on which pump you have (who made the pump)  Che3ck the tag and do a search. Tag = color threads have been posted

Sure I missed a couple of things but that should get things going ;)

Subject came up again in a round about way (discussing 67's) so wanted to post some pictures here as references. From age we can expect the colors and tones to change some what but its what we have to work with. Also we have to consider out flash or lighting wash as well as digital camera settings

Hope this helps others

The steering column outer tube will be the interior color either black charcoal or saddle
