1964.5 Medium Blue interior color????
« on: May 02, 2024, 01:49:38 PM »
I am restoring the interior of my 1964.5 convertible.  The TRIM code is 82 which is Blue Vinyl.  (It appears the trim code went to 22 in 65?)  They call the paint Medium Blue Poly Ford code M1821G which converts to PPG 12989, DuPont 9135, RM BASF 5747.  I purchased a rattle can from NPD labeled Medium Blue Metallic for interior metal and rigid parts P/N AP-5747.  The 5747 jived with the RM BASF 5747 number so I thought I was on the right track.

I received the paint and sprayed it out on a piece of scrap metal.  It is a very pretty color but does not match my interior at all.

A few questions:

1) Is the interior blue paint supposed to be metallic?  I do not believe see metallic in my interior painted metal pieces.
2) Has anyone had any luck matching the medium blue poly paint on the interior of their car?
3) What does "Poly" mean in the Medium Blue Poly. description?

Thank you,
Corey

'poly' imo refers to metallic of which there is none in 64-66 cars. someone will correct me if i am incorrect.

Medium blue poly means metallic and is correct.  The '64.5 and '65 colors were slightly different is why you're seeing a mis-match.  Best to try and have your original samples matched at a paint store.

Thank you Charles.  That explains why some say the NPD paint matches exactly and it is so far off for my car.

I'm not sure why Ford did the color differences, maybe to make it to look more different than '64.5 for the '65 model year intro?  All of the interior codes changed from '64.5 to '65.  The '64.5 colors are a little brighter/nicer than the '65 colors from what I've seen, at least the medium blue and red.  I like the '65 white interior better that '64.5 as the early white is more 'creamy' and the '65 is brighter white with a pearl appearance to the vinyl.  Not many have paid attention to these differences and quite frankly, many have no idea there was a difference.

I remember when the first Mustangs came out they were nothing more than a nice looking car with cheap stuff, mostly Falcon (it was called "special Falcon" for a while). That "Falcon" connection may be what you find in 64, and yes, the 1965 Mustangs were "better".
