Power steering pump ID
« on: March 03, 2023, 09:07:31 AM »
Hello,

I am in the process of restoring the power steering pump of my 67 S code (Dearborn) and am trying to decipher the ID tag to establish if it is the correct part, however for the life of me I cannot work it out, can anyone advise?

I have attached a couple of pictures of the tag and it reads:

HBA BG (STAMPED R IN PLACE OF G)
11 F
7 8 D 3 B (THE 7 AND THE D ARE VERY FAINT)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here's a link to an ID chart for the tags:

I suspect the over stamped R means rebuilt or refurbished.

FYI any of the pumps will work on a given Mustang application . The reservoir can nipple is the important part that changed sometimes depending on application. Sometimes rebuilds come with a can and other times it is just the pump assembly that you have to install with a large O ring into a donor reservoir can. Rear tags can get switched around during rebuild process. Also there was a specific aluminum bracket that was used depending on if the pump was a TRW or Ford Thompson build. That is if those kind of details matter to you.

Looks like you have a PS pump for Big Fords made/supplied by Ford

Yes you are correct Jeff.
The BG was a Big Car application (Galaxie, Montego) but never used on the Mustang.  The BG has the exact same return nipple as the BH Truck pump used for the 67 68 Shelbys.
As Bob stated, the return nipple isa indicator as is the tag stamping.
A 67 S code without a cooler(very doubtful it had one) would be a HBA BF--Nearly straight out return.

I bought a 67 full size Ford pump in order to score the correct dipstick.
When it came it had the upturned can.
Neat!
