Not sure about the diameter, I have never really noticed a difference. I would measure but I am in the middle of final preparations & cleaning my BOSS for next weeks MCA Grand National. What I do know is that getting the correct depth so you engage the ring gear fully, there is a long nose (2-3/8 inch effective depth if my memory is correct) and a shorter 2inch .  As Bob states they are often mixed up and if you see a 4speed MT long nose 164tooth starter at a swap meet, grab it!
