Hello everyone, I just purchased this pace car it has the 2.3/ turbo with manual trans. Original owner says this is how he bought it from the ford dealer in ,79, can anyone shed light on this odd color and stripe.

First, welcome to the site.
I suggest starting with a Marti report. No telling what has been done over 38 years. Hard to believe it has been that long!

No, not much help with what you have photos of. Just make sure it has the "48" in the VIN in the 6th and 7th character position for it to be a true 79 pace car.
Also, the wiring harness behind the instrument panel should have the words PACE CAR.
-
Just done a search here. And this thread is very informative about the 79 pace cars. And also confirms what I posted earlier.

+1000 on the Marti report. Sorry, but never have even heard of a white Pace Car. This is why the Marti report are invaluable.

That's definitely an interesting one. I've never heard of a Pace Car in white either. It'd definitely be worth getting a Marti report to verify how the car was equipped originally.
-
Pretty sure that has been repainted. A buddy of mine had a 79 Pace Car, and was heavily involved in the website. I learned a lot from him about them and can almost guarantee that they all came in pewter silver.
The Marti would tell for sure.
-
Most likely the dealer has painted the car for whatever reason.
I worked at a Ford dealer back then and would see things such
as a repaint on a new car because thats what the customer wanted.
Maybe this was done and the deal fell through so the dealer was
stuck with the car and then sold it to the guy you bought it from.
Have you looked for evidence of pewter paint in the door jams etc?
Can you post a picture of the VIN decal? If you would rather keep
it private leave me a pm. I have two Pace cars, one I bought new.

Yes there is pewter paint under the white, Marti report shows it to be a cobra pace car sold here in ga, but built ,4 days behind scheduled.

Not the most "complete" or thorough color change I have seen. I kinda doubt that was a dealership paint job, if so, I fully understand why a would-be buyer might back out of the deal. Masking not very neat or it has been painted more than once...you pick.
-
Wouldn't be the first previous owner to be "mistaken" about the facts. :o
-
My only facts are the car was bought from the ford dealership in the white color ,considering the time is took to hide the pewter, I've seen worst paint jobs, but my questions are what mustang in that era used a roof stripe, that's outlined in the red and orange colors like the pace car was. Not a big deal just trying to find out, the title doesn't state color back then.. Thanks for all the replies, I greatly appreciate it.!!!
-
No Mustang of that era had that roof stripe.
It was a custom job - most likely done by whomever changed the paint color from the "1E" Pewter Poly indicated on the door tag to white. While the title may not indicate color - the door tag pictured does.
-
Does the door tag match the dash VIN and the title?
The door tag is a Pace car VIN and you can easily see
the pewter paint.
No telling when or why it was painted white after it left the factory.
-
The "Mystery" is pretty much solved just by opening the hood on this one. And the paint around the data plate.....

Thanks for the pictures
