Title: Mustang 50th Charlotte Rare Cars Display
Post by: Anghelrestorations on February 05, 2014, 09:04:58 PM
Charlotte Motor Speedway
April 16 - 20th

I'm working with Ed Meyer on putting together a special display at the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebrations in Charlotte this year.  The theme of the display would be "Rare Cars" and focus on the early muscle cars of Shelby, Boss, and CobraJets and be open to restored and unrestored examples.  One of the issues at Charlotte is trying to coordinate a general area where we can keep a good group of cars together instead of being mixed up all over the show field.  Its my understanding talking with Steve Prewitt and people at the Charlotte Speedway today that the show field is set up as a first come, first serve basis of parking with no specific parking for groups of cars because the number of cars expected.  Once you are inside you can not move your car until after 5:00 each day or you can leave your car in the spot overnight.

We are looking at putting together a large tent and reserved area outside the show field next to the main entrance called the "Fan Zone".  There is an area there already reserved for car clubs and organizations for this exact reason and would allow us a tent and easier access to come and go as needed each day.  Should make for a much better experience overall.  More details and pictures here:
http://www.mustang50thbirthdaycelebration.com/charlotte/moreprogram.html (http://www.mustang50thbirthdaycelebration.com/charlotte/moreprogram.html)

We are looking for a minimum of at least 20 cars/owners that would be willing to commit by Monday Feb 10th.  The only cost associated will be for the tent and/or other expenses which could be about $150 per car for the week there (actual cost still TBD).  This is a paved area outside the main entrance which is unfenced but will have security each night if you want to leave your cars overnight.

If you are interested get in touch with Ed Meyer or myself at 602 628 2522 or marcus@anghelrestorations.com

we got over 50 cars now & every model & performance engine from 65 hipo to 72 351 HO  but the main group I was focusing on was the big block convertibles & I think we got them lined up 67-68-69-70 gt500s & 68 1/2 69 70 71 cj mustangs& all ram-air with   including 5 drag pack convertibles  all the bosses all themach 1s all GTs & even a 428cj grande  all year shelbys .  This group of 50 rare cars for the 50th has never been (& probably never will again) be put together again as it has been very time consuming with last 6 weeks a lot of ph calling & marcus putting list together on computer & turning in to mca & kieth Anderson working on t-shirts with all cars listed to sell at tent & we will have table for boss 428cj & saac registry.

Braved the rain and checked out the show.  Impressed there was the turn out there was today.  However, disappointed mother nature didn't cooperate on the one day i was able to attend.  Asked and was told the rare car tent didn't set up today :(.  Was able to check out some vendors but most cars didn't show and those that did were under covers or shut up tight.  Cool to see 100001 before they covered it and also the 2015 prototype.  Also enjoyed that the rain didn't stop the open track event.  Tried to check out the limited swap meet vendors that were brave enough to show, but at that point in the day we were significantly soaked through and chilly.  We called it at that point and headed back north.  The rain was relentless.  :/

Too bad you had bad info on that.  The Rare Cars tent was "open" and occupied all day on Saturday.  Heck, it was the only dry car viewing place around!

Jim, don't know if you got my text, but your Grande there looked fantastic.    With the magazines on the back seat, it's ok to be "that guy". :-)

The rare cars tent was one of my favorite parts of the Charlotte show.  I just wish I had been able to get a t-shirt!!  This was hands down the best display at the show, IMO.

Ha ha, well if you got it, flaunt it!  :D  The weather really spoiled my socializing plan so I'm sorry we didn't get together longer.

Scott - it was much better with the spring relaxed.  Not "fixed", but better.  Thanks for the steady flashlight  ;D

I guess the bright side of Saturday was it was actually water running under the tent! ;D

In many ways a benefit since it reduced the number of spectators off the street and participants with those 5 gallon buckets everyone was carrying around inside the raceway ;)

Yep - paved surface was slopped so the run off from the tent made most of the pavement inside the tent wet also.

Could have been worst - no tent ;)

Aww man!  I asked 3 different event staff where I can find it.  Two had no clue, and one woman said oh they didn't open today...very disappointed.  I probably could have searched till I found it but the weather discouraged us from walking around the entire venue until we did.  Still had fun seeing what we saw.  Anyone have any pics to share?

................Anyone have any pics to share?

Sure others have more - plenty of cool cars

Shot of the front of the tent. From left to right - 68 Shelby convertible prototype - special order paint 69 GT500 convertible - 70 CJ convertible - and a group of blue Corvettes someone left in front of the tent   :o

Once the building filled up it was difficult finding your way around each car and the people inside. A shot earlier in the day as they filled in. Just the back row

Really nice original (unrestored) 69 CJ San Jose Mach. Terrible glare - inside to outside :(

And another 69 unrestored San Jose Mach I outside that belongs to Randy

One of the 67 Shelby's in the display. This one happens to be one that was just finished. Believe first time out in public

One of maybe five 65 Shelby's parked in the Rare Car Display. We caught Bill Collins (his was parked to the left behind this one) leaving his in the parking lot of the local Lowes as he ran into the store to purchase a couple for small screws.

A few more cars in the back row

Now here is a display you wouldn't see again - well not very likely ;)   Three of the rarest
Hope I've got this right - if not someone will correct me

A cammer followed by a magnesium Boss 429 followed (believe only one built)  by an aluminum Boss 429 (one of 14??)

Thanks Marcus and Ed for a great display. And Thanks to Tony for getting my car there.... greatly appreciated. We had a great time!

J_Speegle, thanks for the pic. The 67 500 is mine. It's far from concours and far from finished, but yes it's the first time since I've owned it (15 years) that it was displayed in public and I think it sat in a NY garage for at least 10 years prior. It's been in hiding for quite some time.

Thanks again guys!

Here's a link to the pictures my wife and I took at Charlotte.

The opening pictures are of my friends Richie & Carolyn (priceless)'s Mach 1.  The last few pictures of the maroon '66 coupe are of my car.  In between is anything and everything that we found interesting!

Hello???

Are you trying to down load individual or a bunch at once.   I often get an error message when I try to do a batch upload so I just work around it. If your having that problem PM Charles and he may be able to help :)  Or start a need help in the general discussion rather than embed it in another thread where it might get overlooked by the mods ;)
