Carpet with AC

How was the carpet installation done on cars with AC if they came from the factory (SJ Oct 64)?  Was the AC system bolted on first and then the carpet added or was carpet in the car first and then the under dash unit put in?  The carpet in the car was replaced and what they did was cut a slit at the front for the back stabilizer hold down on the back of the under dash unit.

Believe I recall carpet in - then AC head installed
