Paint process for '71 Mach 1
« on: January 04, 2011, 09:37:13 PM »
Does anyone know the order in which the argent Mach 1 lower section was painted in '71?  Was the body color applied first, then the argent or was argent done first then masked for body color?

The argent was applied first (before body color)

Like doing the interior first it required less masking and reduced the overspray issue for more of the surface has been my guess

A related question...

How was the argent carried into the door jambs and the inside of the door?  Was the inside of the jamb and door painted body color or was the tape line for the argent carried through?

Mike, The 429 mustang and cougar site has some good pictures of original door jambs that may be helpful. I know the 71 jambs are painted differently than the 72 jambs. When that transition occurred I do not know so build date may be an issue to consider.

Don't have a bunch of pictures but maybe you can piece together enough info from the following original examples - sorry didn't take the pictures ;)

Door opening

This one looks like the owner put a piece of tape on the edge to protect it

Bottom edge of the door - color continuation

Drivers & passenger side doors - appears to be a thin line of paint along the bottom of each

Hope this helps
