I have not seen it but the kit from Ford Motorsport describes exactly that so it can?t be too hard. The hard part would be finding an original R servo cover.

+1 . I am sure they are out there separately somewhere but I have not seen a factory R cover sold separately in many years of parts hound picking and parts networking. You typically have to buy a C6 transmission case to get the servo. At least that is the way I have always seen them. To add to the confusion and even though they will all work there are C6 cases that are unique to the Mustang and others for the Torino etc. also floor shift vs. column shift. The details are hardly noticeable once installed (except column shift levers at trans of course) but it would be prudent to study the details prior to searching.

This R servo cover is a part that seems ideal for a 3D printer to make a mold, then cast up some reproductions. Many people need this but no one makes one. There are numerous R size aftermarket kits all made from billet that look nothing like an original.

The "D" in the VIN appears to be for the Avon Lake, Ohio Assembly Plant that built F350/450/550 Ford Trucks from 1974 on.

IS there a difference between the C6 in the 390 as apposed to the one for the 428 CJ ? Is there a difference in appearance? Did they both use the cast iron tail shaft?

There is not a difference in "outside" appearance of the 390 or 428 CJ case "IF" it is from a Mustang or Cougar. Other full size cars trans have slight nuance differences in the cases. The 390 C6 typically did not use a cast iron tail shaft or R servo . I have heard that some truck C6 non CJ applications came with cast iron tail shaft but can not confirm.

I have a chance to obtain a c6 out of a 69 Torino, iron tailshaft and r servo , needs rebuilt. Will it work if I need to switch the shift linkage from column to floor?

Sure. You just need to change the shift arm to the floor type. It's reproduced and available almost everywhere old Mustang parts are sold.

It will work as Royce said but it will not look exactly like one that was used in a Mustang or Cougar. Nuance difference in case is hardly noticeable once installed even to informed scrutineers but want you to be able to make a informed decision in case the difference mattered.

The 9D142707 stamped on the transmission is the "D" the assembly plant? If so is it Dallas ? If so what was built there representing the "9"

The "9" represents the model year for the vechicle this transmission came from.

Yes the D in the partial VIN is the plant - and no vehicles with the 428 were ever built there.

The D cast in the servo cover represents the size of the piston. R is the largest size. D is smaller, it was used on a lot of mundane stuff like 360 pickup trucks and 390-2V anything. Not a performance servo.
