66 GT350 fasteners

1-
What are the correct fasteners for the trim panels that surround the trap door (at the opening into the trunk) in a 66 GT350?  I believe ford used pop rivets.  On an early car with over ride traction bars and the plexi glass side windows (plus the bolts for the axle limit cables) those panels were probably removed by Shelby American and re-installed.  Did they use rivets or machine screws and nuts?
2-
What are the correct screws for the rear valance?  Some or all painted body color, since the valance was painted on the car?  Same car.

Those rear quarter trim panels were not removed so the San Jose rivets remained typically

2- What are the correct screws for the rear valance?  Some or all painted body color, since the valance was painted on the car?  Same car.


When (approx) was the car built at San Jose?

Two of the screws were in place when the are was painted (hung down from the screws and not pulled into the bottom at the bottom) Normally the third screw in from each end (ones that would end up behind the rear bumper guard arm)

Get back with the date and we'll give you an idea which screws were being used at that time. There are a few choices ;)

Should have a build date of approximately mid November 65.

My 1966 San Jose "K" Fastback was built in mid October and it's relatively untouched so its hardware should be close. The picture shows two different types of screws I found on my rear valence. The round washer head screw on the left, documented as 380650-S101 10-12X3/4 in the 66 body assembly manual, pg63, was the prefered screw, qty 11 (I found 9). The wafer head drill tip screws, I found to be 381997-S2 10-16X1/2, were the initial two installed for painting. The were installed in the second hole from each end. As those two screws were installed prior to painting and at a different assembly station, a different type of screw was possible. In the Ford Car Parts book, the replacement 380934-S36 is an 8-18X1/2pan head, but that is too small to be used in a #10 hole so I consider it to be an error for 64-66, although is was used in 67 on.

To the best of my recollection, my late 9/65 built SJ car had the same screw assortment Jim describes.  I don't recall which location got the wafer head pair though.

The flat ones if used were typically used at the bumper brackets and installed before the paint job. Later in the year you find the intergrated washer style in that location

Let me make a correction - the 66 assembly manual calls out 380934-S36, 8-18X1/2 pan, but per my notes (sometimes difficult to interpert), I found 380650-S101, 381997-S2 and one not identified in in the AMK Guide to Ford Fasteners, a 10-16X3/4 pan head with a drill tip, on my rear valence. The pan head type is the one that Jeff shows in his picture. From what I have found, there is a mix of screw head types, threads and tips (drill or not) used on San Jose cars (also on my late 65 San Jose Fastback) but all seem to be a number 10 screw. Remember, the factory did not intend to build a concourse grade car.
