Title: June 27th 1969 Boss 302 Steering Gearbox Color
Post by: Gcodecowboy on August 21, 2021, 11:43:52 AM
I have a June 27th 1969 Boss 302. It has a steering gearbox with a serial # SMB K 9F20B. What color should it be? If it should be a gunmetal bluish color, does anyone have a picture of how dark the cast surface should be?

Thank you,
Mike

The body should have the look of fresh cast bare cast iron which is darker then bead blasted. The other parts are machine steel and will contrast with the body. If you read the assemblyline manual there are instructions to paint with a brush what you can see from above. That is referring to the top of the box so that a Ford buyer will not potentially see flash rust on the top of the box when looking down in that area. Typically a 2 inch brush and  semi gloss black paint done sloppy and not totally covering the top showing brush marks over the top edge sides based on examples is used to replicate the look. Although the manuals included specific instructions not all were done that way.
