Title: tough paint removal problem
Post by: rtate on July 22, 2022, 11:28:54 AM
I had a friend media blast my hood hinges and he couldn't get all the paint off the parts.
Said he used an "industrial stripper"
What do you suggest I use to get this stubborn paint off ?

Try: acetone; Krud Kutter (available at home depot); a generic paint remover (also Home Depot); used carburetor cleaner (Berryman B-12 - I use it to soak bolts with a lot of paint on them); a different "media" - I prefer glass beads.

It might be a 2K paint -- which is much harder to remove than the 1K used originally.
I would use a cold tank dip (if available) or use a more aggressive media than glass bead.
Some people are afraid to turn up the glass ball media, but it will cut better at 100psi than the usual 35-40. It will also break down faster.
If using an aluminum oxide media you can follow it with the glass ball to get a better finish.
Most people don't understand that the pressure media is like sandpaper and you can go from a course grit to a finer grit (in stages, too). You will also lose details in the process, just like sandpaper.

Can soak the parts in urethane reducer (kind of expensive to do that).  Or, find a wheel shop locally that does powder coating, they might be willing to dip them in the stripper they use for wheels.  There's a Benco product I have used, some really nasty stuff, but don't think they sell to J.Q. Public anymore.

Sometimes a local radiator shop has dip tank that will do it for you as well.
