has anyone tried to hydrodip plastic parts like the armrest bases on the early cars (64 1/2)?? originals are shot and would rather be correct than just pretty.
-
Haven't done it, but interesting. Is there a chrome hydro-dip? Anyone offering the service?
-
Never thought about it but would contemplate it, trying to think what else was plastic with a chrome finish, mine came with the chrome internal door lock knobs but not sure if original.
Here's a link to that post: http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=9007.msg52541#msg52541
If you go down that path Jeff please let us know your findings and post the results...

yes - ive seen services to chrome dip your playstation controllers (so my 15 yr olds gaming is helping my mustang habit). i found someone who does the refinishing for gun stocks - they do the hydrodipping in camo and i figured why not ask. he has referred me to a friend who might be able to help.
i will surely post the results and what they want to do the job.... though i assume that if i can get a few pieces together, it will be better.

hmm - test kit - looks like it might be enough to do some small stuff... like arm rest base

The main question is if they have a chrome that looks right or is it plain silver look?
-
ill be looking into that and obviously reporting back my findings. the one video i posted - it looked like it was pretty shiny chrome looking... and a lot better than some of the silver painted parts ive seen on some 64 1/2 cars

I'm not totally familiar with hydro-dipping, but I wonder how it stands up to repeated cleaning and general wear/tear. Anyone know?

The finish is amazing!

Perhaps for the trailer queens only with minimal use/cleaning.

Hey Randy - i know they use this on motorcycle and car parts -- if you have seen some of the faux carbon fiber things... this is the process they use

Believe it is often done with a heavy clear coat to add gloss and that dipped in plastic look for the cars with the buggy wheels, it would in that way hold up pretty well though that would defeat our want for an original look

Several years back on "Jay Leno's Garage", a similar product was demonstrated by Jay and one of his crew but I think it was sprayed on then rinsed with water. I had the link saved but it went away.

Yup, good find. It is impressive as is the dip process. You would have to commit to more than a couple of items to justify the cost on either, or get rich like Jay.

well depending on how it would hold up - new reproductions are about $20/pair.. and thats not even correct ones for the 64 1/2 cars. i would much rather refinish an original part that just has finish issues than get something else. hell - even if 99% of the people never notice, i will know, and sometimes that is enough

You can do designs, pictures of your kids ... anything you want to pay for
Round here certain crowds like the $100 or $1,000 bill design, the pot leaf or the skulls ::)
