the rubber PS straps, it was mentioned there were 2? i can see one of them on the front side of the tower, was the other one in the same position?.....
Here are some 68 San Jose examples.
NOTE - appears so far that unlike 67 all I've found so far have been retained to the car with the metal brands. In 67 we see metal or plastic brands used during the period where the straps were installed at the factory

thanks Jeff. After cleaning up the broken strap, it looks like it is a flat rubber strap. comparing the 2 straps off my car, the ribs shown on the surviving strap look to be present on the broken strap also, but under a layer of rubber that became brittle and can be scrubbed off without too much hard work. it makes sense to have a ribbed inner layer to give a good bond between the layers of rubber.
as far as i have read, it is believed the ribbed strap is the correct one. could it be possible that a flat strap lost a layer over the years?

I would not worry about having non-ribbed straps. It just depended (ribbed or no ribs) where they cut the straps from on the material they used. Looked at a half dozen today in a yard and only one of the 6 had any ribs. All San Jose late 67 or 68 examples

Will follow up in a few weeks when it ends up in a friends shop. When I took pics it was outside, dark, and misty. Now I just need to remember😊

The retainer is Ford p/n C7OZ-3E523-A, called "Cilp, Power Steering Hose" but shown as "6E523" on the 68 Chassis Assembly Manual, pg 70. (The portion of the same drawing in the 67 Mustang Chassis Assembly Manual, pg 49, is "washed out".) Per the 75 MPC (sec 35 pg 14), it is used on 67 Fairlane, Mustang and Falcons with a 289; and 68 thru 71 Fairlane and Falcons with either a 289 or 302, no Mustang reference. The strap in the 68 Manual is shown as "3C696" but does not show up in the MPC. Neither item appears in the Illustration Section.

We've found at least two versions used across 67 & 68 A metal and a plastic version, both work on different principals to hold themselves in place. Both discussed in another older thread
