Title: Painting over body filler
Post by: preaction on April 02, 2016, 04:08:04 PM
I have a product called metal glaze and its a thin (wet) type of scratch filler and after painting over it I found it can still be seen under the paint. Im being told I need to use a sealer before paint is that right and what type of sealer would be used ? The parts Im working on are small brackets and other parts that may have a deep scratch or pitting on them.

I've used spot putty, sanded the edges when it's dried, a coat of primer as a check, then repeat or apply the final coat of paint.

After applying any type of filler to a part it must be primed or sealed before a topcoat is applied. If the area you are repairing is large I would recommend priming the area well past the feathered edge of the body filler and let it dry and block sand the are down to make everything level. If you are just filling pits in small parts a coat of sealer should be fine.

Im a little new to this when you say sealer what would be an example of one,  can it be in spray can form or needed to be sprayed from a gun.  ;)  Im just filling small imperfections and a few pits here and there does the whole part need to be sealed ?  The current part is a air filter housing.

PPG DPLF Epoxy Primer mixed according to the data sheet with DT Reducer is an example of an excellent sealer.

A spray gun will always bring better results than a spray can in most cases however with small parts a spray can will work fine. If you have all the paint stripped off and the part is in bare metal you will need to use an etch primer over the bare metal for corrosion purposes then a primer or sealer over that. Sealer is more less a very thinned down version of primer. If you are using a spray can on the air cleaner I would buy a primer filler as this will help fill minor imperfections and when sanded down will give a good base for the paint to stick to. It's hard to cover everything to make it clear if you are not familiar with auto painting however there are many good books and videos out there. I would also recommend  going to an auto paint store vs. an auto parts store to buy your products. Tell them what you are doing and they will help you out. good luck!

DPLF 74 is epoxy primer, not a sealer used pre-paint. After you do all your body work and block, sealer is the final coat. It's similar to your standard primer, but is often tinted based on the color coat. My Shelby's sealer was white because of the blue. If you need assistance, once again I can probably get a friend to donate enough for your scratches.

Under features DP is listed as sealer or primer. It is a very good product. Be sure to read and understand the directions completely.
