Title: Heat tube installation
Post by: tvor on May 29, 2017, 03:24:36 PM
Hi guys,
I've been trying to get this darned heat tube installed and for the life of me, I can't get it to go on!  I'm thinking that the reproduction isn't quite right.  But before I go modifying it, I figured I'd check in with you all to see if there is some kind of trick or someone has figured out the proper modification.
Attached are some pics showing the heat tube and the problem with getting it on the exhaust manifold.  The last one has the shroud lined up with the stud, but doesn't clear the top of the manifold.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I ran into the same problem, and Charles Turner indicated to me that there are two styles: an early and a late style.  Once I obtained the proper (original) heat tube, it fit like a glove.  Hopefully, he'll chime in with better details.

Crap! And I spent ~$50 on the darned thing!

Could someone provide the difference?  I would like to get back with the store I bought it from so that they could make a note to their product description, so that no one else buys the wrong thing.

Thanks!

There's a couple versions.  I don't recall which one is early vs. late.  Date codes should answer that.

I think the one that is cut out more on the bottom is late....

Thanks for the pictures Charles! And Chris, I think you are right, the bottom picture is for a late model; that's the style I bought and it's not fitting my car  :( (my car is 9/64)

So does anyone know what changed on the exhaust manifold that they ended up changing the heat tube?  Seems kinda odd to change it.

Thanks again,
Kelley

+1 on that. I have the same tube on my mid 66. I have an original heat tube with reproduction manifolds and its still a bit tight getting it on.

The black one, in the middle, is the OE part for my 5/29/65 car.  Brian

The Bob Mannell smallblock book has info on the different styles.
