Title: Door Handle buttons
Post by: Sunlitgold68 on September 16, 2009, 11:36:59 AM
are the reproduction door handle buttons any good? Is it better to find some OEM ones?

The last reproduction ones I used, the pin was not attached to the button.  Which means the button can be moved around with your thumb once in the handle.  Very annoying and detracts from the overall quality of a restoration.

I would recommend buying NOS or having an original pair re-chromed.  I think my chrome guy only charged like $25 each to do them.

I swapped my original buttons into the repro handles, which improved them, but still not as good as an original as Charles suggested.

Charles, if you don't mind my asking, and not to get off topic, but is your chrome plater the same folks that did your other plating (Surtronics)?

One thing to look out for when rechroming is the show quality triple plating may make them a little "wider" than OE and cause them to bind in the handle. At least mine did that, seems the tolerances are pretty tight.

Surtronics doesn't do any chrome plating.  I use Qual-Krom for that.

Regarding re-chrome of the buttons, haven't had any problems with chrome build-up on the tangs.  Could use a file to smooth them off if it was an issue.  Have seen service replacements that the tangs were about half the size of the originals.  Even in the old FoMoCo boxes.
