Please help me get my mind right on this detail. I thought that the two windshield washer pump designs used on 64.5-66 Mustangs were really "early" and "late", not actually related to their use on 1-speed and 2-speed wipers (which seems to be their popular description). Is this correct, or are they truly "1-speed" and "2-speed" and not "early" and "late"?
What has prompted me to ask is there is a picture of Bob Perkins' amazing low mile '66 car in the current (3/2010) issue of Mustang Monthly and it has what I understood to be the "early" design washer pump, even though it is a very late production car (June 9, 1966).

The unit number is 380258 out of Dearborn, which would put production sometime in June '66.
I've always been under the impression that the washer pump style was not paired to the type of wiper switch. Based on a few examples I found, the single wire pump was used for quite a while in Dearborn production.

Thanks Charles. Kind of hard to call this an early/late thing if they were still using "early" in June '66 :-\ (at least in Dearborn). Would be interesting to find a Dearborn car of any '66 production date with 2-speed wipers to see which pump it has.

My 66 coupe, dearborn car, build 5-14-66, Has a one wire washer motor. The part # c2ab-17664-a, and below that, upside down is # 12 6. Maybe the build date. These numbers are on the back side of the pump housing. I also have a single stage wiper motor. Does anyone have a picture of a nos washer pump that would show original finish of the part?

I haven't looked into the San Jose or Metuchen pics. MCA does not refer to an early or late pump in the rulebook.
As far as the finish on each pump. The single wire is zinc with an aluminum body and the 2 wire is zinc plated also. There are incorrect service replacements out there... not only in finish, but in detail. The single wire pump should have RES and NOZ letters stamped horizontally and "stacked" on top each other.

i have a unrestored Dearborn coupe which was from Mr Perkins own collection with a very late scheduled build date of 27F which has both a 2 speed wiper switch and the supposed late style pump and my 66 GT convertible also from Dearborn 16F has a 2 speed wiper switch and again the latter style pump.
Vin numbers are; 3968#@ on the coupe and 3850@# on the convertible.

NOT 100% sure on your comment. further investigation will be required. pitty i dont have a heap of unrestored 66 dearborn cars here in Australia. hahaha!!!!!
Mr Perkins is on this forum now maybe he can advise on his green 66 coupe and the red 66 convert plus his 66 k code fastback. From memory there all Dearborn examples.

Unfortunately my pictures are not much help in this discussion since its difficult to determine how many speeds the wipers are ;)

Dunno if this helps, or just adds to the confusion, but my '66 Dearborn coupe with an 11F schedule date has single speed wipers and the single wire pump.

My 66 Coupe, Metuchen build, 4/2/66, has a single speed wiper, single wire pump. The above posters car has only a two day different build date,same plant, his is a two speed wiper, two wire pump, we might be onto something!
Is there something to the speed/wire pump correlation in a 66?

My 66 Convertible, Dearborn built, May 13,1966, has a single speed wiper, single wire pump.
