69 351 4V Dual Tip exhaust Ext.?
« on: April 18, 2016, 04:52:50 PM »
Looking for a little help with a parts catalog confirmation.  I think the original application would have been for a 69, 351 w/4v carb. clamp on and not welded.  Stamped on the part is; C9ZA-5C262-B.  So if an assembly line part would it even be noted in the MPC.  Thanks Brian

Thanks Dale for taking a look.  The C9ZZ-C is the service replacement; is stainless steel and is not a rolled dual tip.  I don't recall ever seeing these on a 289/302 car ? Certainly not the right look.  To me it would make sense that the C9ZA-B would not appear in the MPC.  Brian

A few more references for you. The Master Cross Reference List Vol. 3 (Oct. 68) confirms Brian's info about C9ZZ 5255-C servicing C9ZA 5C262-A, as of date of that publication anyway. Interestingly, the MPC dated Aug. 68 shows a service number of C9ZZ 5255-A (triangle note on bottom of righthand page.

Brian,
I have seen the C9ZZ-5255-C tips that have rolled edges.
The rolled tips that I have seen in the C9ZZ-5255-C boxes are marked C9ZA-5C262-E.
I also have purchased the C9ZZ-5255-C back in the day from Ford and they were not rolled.
I don't know when the change happened.

Interesting stuff and just when I think I am seeing a pattern...Puff and it's gone.  The C9AA w/triangle says for GT that would be the 390, 428 and maybe the 351 ?  The 390 and 428 tips were welded on... so not my part.  None of the ebay NOS C9ZZ-C offerings have rolled tips but Vcode has a pair.  So how a C9 exhaust tip got into the Aug. 68 MPC ?  Oh well another two steps forward.  The C9ZA-B tips I have are in the chrome shop right now and looking forward to getting them back.  Thanks,  Brian

So how a C9 exhaust tip got into the Aug. 68 MPC ?

As soon as it was determined to not "carry over" the C7 or C8 tip, and a C9 part went through the design engineering process, in time to get through manufacturing in time for the first 69's to roll off the line.  I would guess that August or September of 68 would be reasonable for that.

As a parallel activity, all of the new stuff would be put together into the first release of the model year 1969 MPC.  A date of August 68 also is very reasonable.

If something breaks or needs service in Sept of 68 for a 1969 car bought in Aug 68 the dealer needed the MPC to find it.

It would really be best if the MPC were in the hands of the dealer before the first 1969 cars arrived.

Got the re-chromed C9ZA-5C262-B tips back today.   Copper, double dip nickle and chrome also seem to have lost the C9ZA stamps.  Brian

...and on the car.  Not the orignal/assembly line exhaust system but at first glance the tips looks pretty good.  Brian

I know this thread has long been responded to, but I thought I would provide some updated PICs and offer the set of tips, should someone need them.

+1
And for you that might consider this pair compare them to the originals since these will take some work to try and get them to look original since they have been completely rechromed.

Added to the original title to better reflect what the OP was focusing on

The dual exhaust tips should be full length and attach right into the muffler for the 428CJ.  The shorter exhaust tips are for the small blocks with the dual exhaust.  I ordered the correct exhaust system from Scott Fuller.  I have a set of original exhaust tips still attached to the muffler, just chose to order all new.  The MPC shows to two different types and how they are mounted.
