« on: August 27, 2020, 09:17:46 AM »
Good Morning:
Any guidance on how to refinish the plating on ashtrays or anyone offer any replating service. In particular, My 67 Fastback center console ashtray is rusted and would like to restore. Thank you in advice for any advice

You would first need to sand through or fill the pitting from the rust (after all rust is removed by disolvers or media blasting).
The process of rechroming is pretty expensive but the chrome shop will always do one of two things for you...plate directly over the pitting, resulting in a poor-looking job or if you have the dough, many quality shops will do the repair work for you (expect to have much money). It's all a choice.
I don't smoke so I went another "NON-Concours" route...a lousy choice perhaps but it looks very nice "flocked".

I thought there was a relatively decent reproduction?  I'd consider that and use the original top piece.

Otherwise, the best thing is either find a nice original or NOS.  Re-chroming will have varying results as mentioned.

Everything is subject to change but last time I looked, reproduction ones were not available for 67/8.
