Product Evaluation -
« on: March 01, 2012, 08:10:20 PM »
In my post "Why Doesn't Somebody", I listed the socket for 65 and 66 Mustang full length console glove box door as a candidate for reproduction. Well I found one on e-bay (see link below), bought it and I would like to give some information on the part. There are two pictures with different colored backgrounds for contrast. The reproduction is on the bottom in both. Note: 1964 and early 65 full length consoles use a different glove box light method.
1. It fits the console.
2. The light socket doesn't, the reproduction hole is 0.615in dia. the originals are 0.625in dia. This can be fixed.
3. The two mounting tabs on the side opposite the contact arm are 0.300in wide, the originals are 0.200in wide. This should not be a problem, and may actually be structurally beneficial.
4. The width of the transition piece from the base to the contact arm is 0.500in wide, the originals are 0.375in wide, plus the arm's cut is skewed about 0.100in to the left. This should not be a problem.
5. The thickness is 0.019in thk, the originals are 0.014in thk, measured opposite the contact arm; all three arms are the same at 0.0015in thk.
6. The "twang" test - a subjective flick of the contact arms while held firmly on my desk which may or may not be a valid method of testing, the originals "sounded" more firm and gave a distinct solid sound. The reproduction appears to have the same amount of "give" but was not the same solid sound. After I get the reproduction installed and open the glove box door I'll be able to tell whether the firmness is OK.
My personal evaluation - an acceptable reproduction although maybe not a 100 percent perfect.

Yeah, Fed up for years with no one even bothering to make the part, Someone had the guts to take it upon themselves and repro the part themselves.. Glad someone had the gusto to do it!  Take that aftermarket!   Some dude on Ebay is selling them... Hope he makes a bundle...He deserves it!
