Differences in Coils?
« on: September 29, 2014, 09:29:01 AM »
I was at an auction over the weekend and picked up a couple of NOS yellow top coils still in original Ford boxes.  They had a B8 part number.  They are identical in appearance to my Mustang coils.  My question is are they different internally from my original Mustang coils?

Do you have the whole part number? Maybe some pictures you can post?

The coils should have a B6A‑12029‑B part number I thought to be the same for use on our Mustangs.

Richard , you are correct in the part #.  I also finally found it in my '70 Ford parts book and this # is listed for all engines and all models from 1965 thru 1970.  They are dated 3EBC, 8CBB and 8BDB.
Not sure what I'll do with them.  I had to buy a pile of NOS boxes of BRF 42 and AGRF 52 spark plugs to get the coils.  Those I'm definitely going to sell cheap.

Let me know if you want to sell one of the NOS coils.

There are numerous versions floating out there as NOS that are slightly different than what was originally used on Mustangs - just a heads up. Some are slightly (maybe 1/2") shorter others are marked for transistor ignition systems

Jeff,
The can portion measures 3.625" and the yellow top is above that.  They were all in Ford coil boxes but I well understand anything can be switched into a box.
I've had a couple of inquiries to purchase these but I do not know what they are worth.  I did an advanced search for sold coils on eBay but did not find good examples as original as what I have.
This estate auction of mostly Model A cars and parts ran for over 10 hrs. with 3 & sometimes 4 auction rings. The owner was over 90 yrs. old when he died and took great pride in 70 years of hoarding old Ford parts.   It was evident that he had cleaned out more than one old Ford garage.
One 66 Mustanag fastback that had been a circle track racer sold for $1,500.  It had very little rust but the only straight panel was the roof.  Absolutely all remaining exterior panels would have to be replaced.  It was a shell of a car.

Make sure they are not 6 volt coils . Easy to get those confused as they look very similar. Also the coils for transistorized ignitions from the 60's will not work with our 60's mustangs ether. If they are NOS most likely they will have a ink stamp to help identify them as usable on a Mustang  or not.

Another difference is coils dated prior to (I think) 1962 do not have the alpha-numeric code between the BAT and DIST terminals. Also, coils up to some time in 1965 have an indexing bump that locates the coil in the brackets that have a hole.
