Title: Correct fuel pump for 1966 A-code
Post by: dsielke on December 29, 2017, 03:41:24 PM
I did a search but the pics for someone else asking were killed by photobucket. What would be a correct fuel pump for a Dec. 1, 65 San Jose A-code GT?

My pump started leaking but I am sure it was a replacement so I figured I would start the hunt for a correct one.

If you can find that link again and let me know where it is we can likely fix those pictures

As far as the pump -

- CARburaTER cast - Red arrow
- button top,
- natural cast aluminum body,
- zinc dichromate stamped steel sections
- engineering number and date is stamped into the side of the mounting flange - Green arrow

Sure someone will come along and provide the correct engineering number for your application ;)

If you find a used on they can be rebuilt and restored  just find a good candidate (no pitting, hasn't been blasted...)

We’re running a 4193S with a date code 10M5A (CARbureTER on housing, as in Jeff’s picture) rebuilt by Fred Ballard:

My records show the pump for a 66 289 is a Carter 4193 but is not a button top.

Should definitely be a button top for a 66.

Awesome info. I am in Santa Clarita. Canyon Country is part of the Santa Clarita valley. Nice and close for when I find one.  8)

Fred usually does batches, so not sure if it could be done quickly.

I don’t need it quickly, I picked up an inexpensive autozone one to get me by till I can get a correct one. Just time to start looking for correct parts for the GT. My convertible has been getting most of the attention lately.  :)

You should try and contact him when possible. Off chance he may already have one from previous batches. He's a good guy too. Stands behind all his work and is knowledgeable as all get out.

Be sure to remember when trying to find a core that the 66-67 fuel pump would have a 5/16 inlet. Starting in 68 the pumps had 3/8 inlet. The difference in size can be distinguished ether by the tube or by the bulge it makes in the 5/16 fuel line when viewed by informed eyes. Also remember for the 66 that the button top design , CAR bura TER markings and inlet size are most important in that order IMO. The visuals should be of concern in order of prominence IMO. The flange number and or date codes are only looked at as possible deductions in the most difficult concours classes regardless of venue where NO REPRODUCTION parts are allowed and date code correct parts are expected. Even then they could be missed given the location and how difficult to see once installed.  The point i am trying to make is so someone doesn't pass up a usable core because it doesn't have the correct flange number and or date code. If someone is concerned about the engine running different given a different flange number they should know that they all pump the same approximate volume and pressure regardless of flange number . The after market alternatives all function the same at least close enough for government work as they say  :D . The autoparts store alternatives don't differentiate between 2v or 4V etc. They typically only differentiate between engine family's  289/302 ,390/427.428 etc. because they well all work on a given engine family. For this reason the flange number should not be a concern for reasons of not performing right.  Nice to have ,icing on the cake but not the most important factor on a fuelpump IMO.

This ^^^

Also I spoke with Fred last year as he was getting ready to do another run. If I recall correctly, he told me there is a special tool used to take them apart and crimp back together. Fred had someone doing this for him and made it sound like that may be coming to an end. I don’t know what came of this but for parts like this, sometimes it is best to get them while you can

My April '66 coupe clearly has the button top fuel pump.  It also has fuel hoses attached with the crimp type clamps.  The fuel pump housing sweats fuel when running.  It is a fire catastrophe waiting to happen.

Would be a good idea to contact Fred to see about getting yours rebuilt also.  Ethanol gas probably ate up the original rubber inside your pump.
