Title: Body Seal Rubber Plugs
Post by: Sunlitgold68 on December 16, 2009, 03:45:27 PM
Do most people use reproduction body seal plugs or try to find NOS ones? I see kits of 33 or 38 plugs from the vendors that are suppose to do the whole car, is this correct? thanks

You'd be surprised how well originals hold up, but they require special care removing them to be able to re-use.  Otherwise, the only other option is repro.  NOS are pretty tough to find, except for the seat hole plugs and the later service part is not even correct anyway (ones with 'X' in the middle.)

Rarely does a judge actually look at the rubber plugs and the rules do not call for the x-type so the reproductions are just fine.

On an otherwise perfect car, I would consider incorrect body plugs fair game!!  ;D

Do the reproductions use the same stamped # on the outside as the originals?

I know a few people who have alot of these NOS plugs in various sizes, I'm wondering if you buy a repro plug kit, could you accurately use it to match with the NOS ones as far as size and the #'s and assemble an NOS plug kit from the repros?

The repro's usually have the Ford number on them, but sometimes maybe in a different print/font.  You'd have to hold an original side by side with a repro to see the difference.  Would think that the service replacements might not always be an exact replacement either.

Respectfully disagree

Written rules are only there as reminders (and often as helps for the owners) for the judge. That being said the judges have never been limited to only the details listed in the section. ANY detail (short of date codes in MCA Concours and SAAC Div II for example) can be used to determine the car's standing in any given section listed on the sheets.
